Earlier that month, Payne had attended Horan’s concert in Buenos Aires. The two events are separate: one was a visit before Payne’s death; the other was part of the grief expressed afterward.
When did Liam Payne die?
Payne died at age 31 on October 16, 2024, after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Associated Press reported. The AP’s report described information from the early investigation, not a final legal determination.

Did Liam Payne attend Niall Horan’s concert before he died?
Yes. Payne attended a Horan concert in Buenos Aires earlier in October 2024, according to El País’s June 2026 retrospective. That concert attendance happened before Payne’s death and should not be confused with Horan’s later tribute.
What did Niall Horan and One Direction say after Payne’s death?
On October 17, 2024, the surviving One Direction members—Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson—issued a joint statement expressing their grief, as reported by the Associated Press. The statement described them as “completely devastated” and said, “The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever.” They also said they would take time to grieve and process the loss. Read the AP report on the statement.

How did Horan remember Payne later?
In a June 2026 retrospective, El País reported that Horan’s album Dinner Party includes “End of an Era,” a song dedicated to Payne. The outlet quoted Horan reflecting on the loss in Spanish: “Todavía me parece irreal. El primer día pensé: ‘No, no puede ser’” (“It still feels unreal to me. The first day I thought: ‘No, it can’t be.’”). This is a quotation reported by El País from an interview, rather than a transcript reviewed here. El País’s retrospective covers Horan’s later reflections.
What is known about the circumstances of Payne’s death?
The Associated Press reported that Argentine prosecutors described the circumstances as suspicious and possibly involving drugs, while saying at that point there was no sign of a third party being involved. Those were statements about an early investigation, not a final finding about intent or cause. The AP report provides that contemporaneous account.
Reuters separately reported that a hotel employee called emergency services before the fall. Reuters said the call audio came from Argentina’s Buenos Aires security ministry, which confirmed to the news agency that the call concerned Payne; Reuters translated the transcript from Spanish. Reuters reported the emergency call.
The sources cited here do not establish the current legal disposition of the case. The early prosecutorial account should not be treated as proof that an investigation has concluded or as a final legal outcome.
