If you liked how Asako Yuzuki’s Butter makes food part of a story about women, social expectations and gendered power, try Fumiko Hayashi, Mieko Kanai, Banana Yoshimoto or Sayaka Murata. Their work spans different eras and forms: food can signal hunger and poverty, shape unequal relationships, offer comfort, or expose the pressure to live by conventional rules.
What makes Butter a useful starting point?
Yuzuki’s novel follows journalist Rika Machida as she investigates Manako Kajii, a convicted killer. Food-centred correspondence and meetings become part of Rika’s inquiry, and the novel uses relationships among women to examine expectations placed on them. The Sainsbury Institute describes the book as partially based on the real-life “Konkatsu Killer” case and notes its commentary on misogyny and unfair beauty standards.
The recommendations below are not a ranking, and they do not all make the same argument. They are different routes into fiction where eating, cooking or food-related routine carries more weight than background detail. The descriptions of these works as engagements with gender and power reflect Hannah Osborne’s literary readings in a 2024 article republished by Scroll.in from The Conversation.

Fumiko Hayashi: hunger, work and constrained domestic life
Hayashi’s fiction, as Osborne presents it, follows resilient women negotiating everyday hardship, often from the underclass. In Diary of a Vagabond, food peddling and hungry consumption make economic insecurity tangible. Food here is bound to getting by, not simply to pleasure or domestic ritual.

Readers can also look for Late Chrysanthemum (1948) and Floating Clouds (1951). Osborne discusses Repast as well, connecting the kitchen and a housewife’s constrained domestic life; the work also has a film adaptation. These works belong to a different historical setting from Yuzuki’s contemporary novel, so Hayashi is a choice for a longer view of women’s lives and material conditions, not a direct equivalent to Butter.
Mieko Kanai: eating and the power in everyday relations
Kanai’s early short fiction repeatedly returns to preparing and eating food. Osborne reads those scenes as a way of examining sexual power relations in early-1970s Japan. In “Rabbits” (1973), Lily leaves high school to prepare and eat feasts with her father; her growing distance from conventional society is part of the story’s movement.

In “Rotting Meat” (1996), a sex worker’s relationship with a butcher complicates her routines and livelihood. The two stories offer different situations, but both make food part of how relationships and daily life are organised. They are useful choices if you want fiction that is more unsettling and formally adventurous than a straightforward domestic drama.
The cited discussion does not identify a currently available collection containing either story. Check the contents of a specific edition before buying; a collection’s title alone does not establish that it includes these pieces.

Banana Yoshimoto: a kitchen as refuge during grief
In Kitchen (1988), orphaned Mikage retreats to her late grandmother’s kitchen while processing loss. Ordinary food and kitchen objects become sources of comfort and wonder. Osborne also places the story in relation to the optimism of Japan’s bubble-era years and the possibility of moving beyond conventional gender roles.
The kitchen is not best reduced to either a symbol of oppression or a guaranteed escape from it. Its meaning comes through Mikage’s experience: domestic space offers solace, while the story leaves room to imagine life beyond inherited expectations. Choose Kitchen for a quieter, inward-looking change of pace from Butter.

Sayaka Murata: routine outside the home
Convenience Store Woman (2016) centres on Keiko, who finds contentment in the rules and regularity of convenience-store work. Food and store routines help shape the novel’s setting, while Keiko’s choices challenge social expectations for a single woman.
Osborne describes Keiko as neurodivergent; that is a reading of the character, not an uncontested clinical diagnosis. Murata’s novel is a strong pick if you want a contemporary setting in which routine offers its own order and the pressure to conform becomes a source of social satire.

Choose by the role food plays
- For hunger and economic precarity: start with Hayashi’s Diary of a Vagabond.
- For food entwined with sexual power and uneasy relationships: try Kanai’s “Rabbits” or “Rotting Meat,” after checking that your edition includes the story.
- For comfort and grief in a domestic setting: choose Yoshimoto’s Kitchen.
- For workplace routine and pressure to meet social expectations: choose Murata’s Convenience Store Woman.
Across these works, food may mark poverty, organise labour and domestic life, structure relationships or sit within routines that challenge expectations of femininity. That range is the point: these writers work in distinct periods, forms and settings, rather than offering four versions of a single claim about women or Japanese society.
