In a December 14, 2022 interview with Mirtle Peña-Calderon for People Chica, actor Lisette Olivera reflected on pursuing creative work, the family support behind her career, and how her background helped her connect with Jess Valenzuela in National Treasure: Edge of History. Her message to aspiring artists was both wholehearted and practical: put your heart into the work, and prepare so you can step forward when an opportunity comes.
How Olivera’s own story connected her to Jess
When National Treasure: Edge of History premiered in December 2022, Olivera played Jess Valenzuela. She said her family’s experience of leaving Mexico for the United States gave her a personal point of connection to Jess’s story. That connection informed her approach to the character, but Olivera also described building Jess through her relationships: her bond with her mother, the experience of losing her, and the friends who become her chosen family.
Olivera began pursuing dance, acting, and music when she was young. She recalled getting the call that she had landed the role while shopping with her mother, who had supported her from the beginning. The moment brought together a professional opportunity and the family encouragement she described as important to her journey.
Why representation and storytelling matter to her
Olivera said she did not see much of her family’s experience reflected in the stories available to her while growing up. She valued Jess as a multidimensional character and hoped the story could speak to people beyond the community it depicts. For Olivera, representation is not only a matter of showing a particular background; it is also about giving audiences a character whose relationships and struggles invite connection.

She sees storytelling as a way to prompt feeling and reconsideration. “Stories are really important to me. That’s why I love what I do, and I think they have the power to change perspectives—worldly perspectives—that people have and it allows for more empathy to grow,” she told Peña-Calderon.
Olivera’s advice to aspiring artists
Olivera’s advice pairs commitment with preparation. She encouraged artists to bring genuine care to their work: “I would say put your heart into everything that you do.” She also emphasized readiness, because an opportunity is useful only if a person is prepared to meet it:

“You have to prepare yourself because when you have the luck to have one of those opportunities that come once in a lifetime, you know, we’re ready to jump in and show them who we are.”
Her point is not that preparation guarantees a particular result. It is that sustained effort lets an artist respond more fully when a chance arrives.

Taking life day by day
Asked what advice stayed with her, Olivera offered a reminder to focus on the present rather than demand certainty about everything ahead: “The one thing that pops up in my head is to take it day by day and to remember that each moment brings something so unique.” She also spoke about the role of family and chosen family in helping her keep going through difficult periods.
These reflections appeared in a personal interview published on December 14, 2022, alongside the premiere of National Treasure: Edge of History. They describe Olivera’s perspective at that time; the interview does not establish later career developments.
