Logan Paul said he paid about $3.5 million for a purported sealed case of first-edition Pokémon cards. When he opened it with collector Bolillo Lajan San at Baseball Card Exchange in Chicago, reports said the case contained non-Pokémon cards, described as G.I. Joe cards. The case’s provenance later drew scrutiny, but the available reporting does not establish who knowingly misrepresented it or whether Paul ultimately recovered the full amount.
What Logan Paul thought he was buying
Paul described the purchase as a sealed case of first-edition Pokémon cards. The reported price—about $3.5 million—was the amount he said he paid, not a verified measure of his final net loss. ComicBook.com covered Paul’s video, titled “I Lost $3,500,000 On Fake Pokémon Cards,” and GameSpot reported on the transaction in January 2022. ComicBook.com’s coverage and GameSpot’s report describe the claimed purchase and its aftermath.
What the opening revealed
Paul and collector Bolillo Lajan San brought the case to Baseball Card Exchange in Chicago for an opening and assessment. Reports said the contents were not Pokémon cards, but G.I. Joe cards. That discovery exposed the difference between packaging that appeared intact and proof that the contents were genuine Pokémon product; an exterior seal alone did not establish what was inside. Why the case’s history was questioned
After the opening, Pokémon collectors raised questions about the case’s provenance and authentication history. PokéBeach’s January 2022 reporting documented inconsistencies in the accounts surrounding its history and concerns about conduct in the chain of sale. What remains unsettled
The documented account establishes the reported purchase price and the reported discovery of non-Pokémon cards. It does not settle who knowingly misrepresented the case, establish criminal liability, or verify that Paul recovered the full $3.5 million. Reports and discussion about repayment vary, so the purchase figure should not be presented as a confirmed final loss.
What collectors can take from the case
The episode is a warning about provenance, especially for expensive sealed collectibles: a credible-looking package or prior assessment is not the same as verified contents and a reliable chain of custody. Independent checks can reduce uncertainty, but no single inspection or authentication step guarantees that a sealed case is genuine. This lesson concerns verification of a high-value item; protective sleeves or storage for individual cards would not address that kind of provenance risk.
