Reports of allegations against Jonathan Majors reach back to around 2013, during his Yale years, but those earlier claims were not decided in his criminal trial. That case concerned a March 2023 confrontation with Grace Jabbari: a jury convicted Majors of third-degree assault and second-degree harassment, while acquitting him of two other counts. The distinction between reported allegations and court findings is central to understanding the phrase “nearly a decade.”
How far back do the allegations against Jonathan Majors go?
Rolling Stone’s 2023 investigation reported allegations reaching back to Majors’s time at Yale, beginning around 2013. In February 2024, the Los Angeles Times summarized New York Times reporting in which former partners Emma Duncan and Maura Hooper described alleged physical or emotional abuse during relationships spanning 2013–2019. These are reported allegations, not findings reached by a court. Majors’s representatives denied abuse claims, according to the reporting.
So “nearly a decade” describes the span covered by media reports about alleged behavior. It does not mean that a court found abuse over that period, or that the criminal prosecution covered those earlier relationships.
What was Jonathan Majors convicted of?
The criminal case centered on the March 2023 confrontation with Jabbari. On December 18, 2023, a Manhattan jury returned a split verdict: Majors was convicted of assault in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, and acquitted of two other counts. The verdict addressed the charges tried in that case, not the earlier allegations described in news reports.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg characterized the prosecution’s evidence as showing “a cycle of psychological and emotional abuse, and escalating patterns of coercion.” That was Bragg’s description of the evidence presented by prosecutors; it was not a jury finding about every allegation reported from earlier years. The defense disputed Jabbari’s account.
What sentence did he receive?
On April 8, 2024, Majors avoided jail. The court ordered him to complete a 52-week batterer’s intervention program, continue mental-health therapy, and have no contact with Jabbari. The Los Angeles Times reported that violating the sentence terms could expose him to a year in jail.

What happened to Grace Jabbari’s lawsuit?
Jabbari filed a separate federal civil complaint alleging assault, battery, defamation, and related harms. A complaint records what a plaintiff alleges; it is not, by itself, proof that those claims were established. In November 2024, the parties reached a settlement and the case was dismissed with prejudice, meaning it was ended and could not be refiled. The Associated Press report did not disclose the settlement terms. A settlement is not a jury verdict on the complaint’s allegations.
How to distinguish the different claims and outcomes
- Earlier relationships: allegations reported by journalists about events said to span 2013–2019; they were not adjudicated in the criminal trial.
- Criminal case: a trial over the March 2023 confrontation with Jabbari, resulting in two convictions and acquittals on two other counts.
- Civil case: Jabbari’s separate complaint, which ended in a settlement and dismissal with prejudice in November 2024; the reported settlement terms were not disclosed.
Later reporting and a 2022 recording
In March 2025, the Associated Press covered a recording of a 2022 conversation released by Rolling Stone and revisited the earlier allegations and conviction. The recording and subsequent coverage are additional reporting context; they do not replace the jury’s verdict or establish every disputed allegation.
