Joker: Folie à Deux draws its inspiration chiefly from Arthur Fleck’s inner life: Todd Phillips uses music and fantasy to express what Arthur cannot put into ordinary words. Phillips also connects the sequel to the first film’s visual language and to his broader interest in gritty character studies, while describing the musical sequences as part of Arthur’s imagined emotional world—not a simple change of genre.
Phillips’s starting point: a character study
Phillips has described the original Joker as an effort to move away from stories about groups and focus deeply on one person. In a 2024 interview with Terry Gross, he pushed back on the idea that the film was merely a way to get a superhero movie funded: he said the superhero framing made a character-centered studio project easier to get made, but the creative aim was a close study of Arthur Fleck. That context matters when considering the sequel. Phillips’s account points less to a single source film than to a method: keep the story anchored in Arthur’s perspective, then use the form of the film to show what is happening inside him.
What films and other influences did Phillips name?
Phillips discussed 1970s film influences and acknowledged the wider context of Batman comics and screen adaptations. In the interview, Gross named Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy while describing films paid tribute to in the first Joker; Phillips’s response addressed broader influences. That distinction is important: the interview supports placing the first film in conversation with those titles, but it does not establish that Phillips named each one as a direct or exclusive model for Folie à Deux.

The sequel’s creative approach is better understood as an extension of the first film’s character focus than as a replication of a particular earlier movie. Phillips’s public comments do not identify one prior film as the sequel’s blueprint.
Why is Joker: Folie à Deux a musical?
For Phillips, music gives Arthur a way to express feelings he cannot articulate in ordinary speech. “Most of the music in the movie is really just dialogue,” he told Variety in August 2024. The songs often belong to the characters’ imagined world rather than unfolding as conventional public performances. The official synopsis places Arthur in Arkham awaiting trial, with Joaquin Phoenix returning as Arthur Fleck/Joker and Lady Gaga playing Lee Quinzel. That setup gives the film a relationship around which to shape its imagined musical expression. Warner Bros. Pictures’ official film site.
How Lee Quinzel entered the story
Phillips said Phoenix raised the idea of pairing Arthur with a female Joker as a dance partner in what he called a “psychotic tango.” Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver developed that starting point into Harley Quinn, played by Gaga as Lee Quinzel. This is evidence of how the relationship concept took shape; it is not evidence that a specific earlier film inspired the sequel’s romance or musical form. Variety, August 21, 2024.

How the sequel continues—and changes—the first film visually
Phillips told American Cinematographer that the sequel takes place in the same world as the first film and that its opening stretch continues the visual language established with cinematographer Lawrence Sher. The shift comes as Arthur encounters what he believes is love and the film opens into his fantasy world. Phillips described the creative challenge this way: “The fun part was coming up with what Arthur’s fantasy world looks like when he finally finds the thing he’s been craving his whole life — love. Or at least what he thinks is love.” American Cinematographer, December 23, 2024.
The result, in Phillips’s description, is continuity at the level of the film’s world and visual foundation, with a new subjective layer for Arthur’s imagined experience. The music and fantasy are linked: both let the audience encounter emotion as Arthur experiences or imagines it.

What the inspiration story does—and does not—establish
- Established: Phillips’s goal of centering Arthur as an individual, his discussion of 1970s film influences and Batman-related context, and the sequel’s use of music as emotional expression.
- Established: The opening’s visual continuity with the first film and the later development of Arthur’s imagined world around love.
- Not established: A single direct movie source for Folie à Deux, or that its songs are conventional musical performances detached from Arthur and Lee’s subjectivity.
The first Joker earned more than $1 billion worldwide, according to Warner Bros.’ official film site. That figure belongs to the 2019 film; it does not explain the sequel’s creative choices. Warner Bros. Pictures, 2024.
