When Anne Hathaway asked whether anyone in the audience had read the book behind The Idea of You, the room reportedly went quiet. Jimmy Fallon turned the pause into a joke about reading, Stephen Colbert and Audible, and Hathaway joined in.
What happened when Anne Hathaway asked about the book?
Hindustan Times reported on May 2, 2024, that Hathaway appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon while promoting The Idea of You, a film based on a book. During the conversation, she asked, “Has anybody here read the book?” The report says the audience stared silently.

Fallon answered, “No, we don’t read. This is ‘The Tonight Show.’ You want to go to Stephen Colbert if you want to get people to read books. Lame!” He then added, “We do Audible here.” Hathaway continued the bit with, “What’s a book?” These lines are reproduced in the Hindustan Times report; the exchange has not been independently checked against the episode video. Why did the audience go silent?
The report describes the silence after Hathaway’s question, but does not establish why audience members did not respond. It may have been an awkward pause that gave Fallon an opening for the joke; claims about what the audience knew, thought or had read would go beyond the available account.

Was this the year’s “most impressive” interview?
That description is not supported as a factual ranking. The available report presents the moment as an awkward, funny exchange; it cites no award, year-end list, critic consensus or comparison with other interviews. “Most impressive” is best understood as promotional wording, not an established distinction.

No. In 2018, Justin Timberlake appeared on the show while on vocal rest and took part in deliberately silent segments, including a couch interview, according to TheWrap’s report. In Hathaway’s reported exchange, it was the audience that fell silent after her question.
