Why DiMeo is known for a groundbreaking transplant
In August 2020, NYU Langone Health performed what it describes as the first successful face and double-hand transplant of its kind, with DiMeo as the recipient. The hospital says the surgery lasted approximately 23 hours and involved more than 140 healthcare professionals. Those figures describe this operation, not a typical transplant or a general measure of transplant outcomes.

DiMeo had suffered third-degree burns over 80 percent of his body in a July 2018 car accident, according to NYU Langone. The hospital describes extensive reconstructive treatment before the transplant, followed by inpatient rehabilitation at Rusk and then outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy. The transplant was part of a long course of care, not a simple or complete cure.
The support around his recovery
Recovery also involved support for DiMeo’s family. myFace reported that it provided 62 nights of housing near NYU Langone during pre-surgery care, surgery, recovery and follow-up. That account offers a glimpse of the practical support surrounding his treatment without reducing the story to the operation alone.
