How to understand the official finding
Cause and manner of death are separate determinations: the reported cause was acute intoxication involving fentanyl and cocaine, while the manner was accidental. The Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner says its role is to investigate the cause and manner of deaths occurring under violent, suspicious, or unexplained circumstances. Its public description explains the office’s general remit; it is not a case-specific report about Hayes. Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner
Massachusetts public-health figures provide context, not details about Hayes’s individual case. The Department of Public Health reported that, among 2,119 opioid-related overdose deaths in Massachusetts with toxicology screens available in 2021, fentanyl was present in 93% and cocaine in 51%. The report cautions that toxicology screening alone is not enough to establish a final cause of death; that clinical judgment belongs to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
