What song did Jill Sobule sing in Clueless?
“Supermodel” is the Sobule song associated with the Clueless soundtrack. Her official biography links the song’s use in the film to the wider success of her 1995 self-titled album. In a 2015 interview with TIME, Sobule said the song came to her rather than being written by her; she agreed to sing it after adding a bridge about eating disorders. She also described her songwriting approach as putting “a little politics or social conscience” in songs “cloaked in a silly goofiness.”
What was Jill Sobule known for beyond “Supermodel”?
“I Kissed a Girl”
Sobule’s 1995 self-titled album also featured “I Kissed a Girl,” a distinct signature song from “Supermodel.” Her official website calls it the first openly queer-themed Billboard Top 20 record. The Los Angeles Times reported in 2025 that it reached No. 67 on the Billboard Hot 100; that chart position is presented here as the newspaper’s reporting.

A wider catalog of humor and social commentary
The association with Clueless brought “Supermodel” lasting visibility, but it does not represent the full range of Sobule’s work. Her official biography describes songs addressing political and social subjects, often through a comic or satirical lens. That blend is also evident in her account of adding the eating-disorder bridge to “Supermodel.”
Making music after label setbacks
After difficulties with record labels, Sobule turned to fans to help finance later work. The Associated Press reported that she raised tens of thousands of dollars for a later album, and ABC identified California Years as crowd-funded. The approach helped her continue recording and performing beyond the commercial breakthrough of the 1990s.

Her legacy
Sobule’s manager, John Porter, called her a “force of nature and human rights advocate” and said her music was “woven into our culture.” Her catalog connects a widely recognized film song with candid, satirical songwriting and advocacy, while her later fan-funded work shows how she continued to make music after the major-label path became difficult.
In an Associated Press interview about her musical, Sobule said, “In a good way, I feel like I’m still a rookie. There’s so much more to do and I haven’t done my best yet.” The remark captures the forward-looking spirit of a career that continued to develop long after “Supermodel” first reached film audiences.
