Her mother, Laura Bush, had worked at the camp, and Bush Hager said many of her friends had grown up there and had children there. Her own children had been dropped off at a different Texas summer camp—not Camp Mystic, according to the show’s clip description.
What Jenna Bush Hager said on TODAY
In a clip published July 7, 2025, by the official TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle channel, Bush Hager recounted dropping her children off at a summer camp in Texas after historic floods devastated central Texas, including Camp Mystic. The clip description distinguishes her children’s camp from Camp Mystic. Watch the TODAY clip.
Speaking about the vulnerability parents feel as children grow up, Bush Hager said: “We send our kids into the world with the faith that they can have happy lives, joyful lives, and as adults, we know pain. We hope that our kids never face it.”
Her family and friends’ connection to Camp Mystic
TV Insider reported on July 7, 2025, that Bush Hager told Craig Melvin her mother, Laura Bush, had been a counselor at Camp Mystic. She also described friends who had grown up at the camp and whose children attended it. That personal history helped explain why the flooding and its toll felt especially close to home. The July 2025 flooding at Camp Mystic
Camp Mystic is a girls’ summer camp in Hunt, Texas, on the Guadalupe River. In its July 2025 coverage, The Associated Press reported that the river rose 26 feet (7.9 meters) in about 45 minutes during the early-morning flood. The report described destruction at the camp, rescue efforts and deaths; that river-rise figure is a contemporaneous account of the disaster, not a current measurement. What changed for Texas summer-camp safety
On September 5, 2025, the Texas Governor’s office announced that House Bill 1, the Youth CAMPER Act; Senate Bill 1, the Heaven’s 27 Camp Safety Act; and Senate Bill 3 had been signed into law. The Governor’s summary describes provisions addressing emergency plans, staff training, camper orientation, floodplain disclosures, camp licensing and grants for early-warning sirens.
