Jeff Probst’s explanation was that an advance plan to use an idol can change at Tribal Council; Hunter said he thought he could survive while keeping it, but misread how the votes would fall.
Why Hunter left with his idol
Hunter’s elimination followed a tie and a revote. He had told other players he planned to play his idol, but after the votes were read, he decided he might be able to hold it for another week. TV Insider reported that Probst discussed the decision on On Fire with Jeff Probst.
Hunter offered a more specific account after leaving the game: he expected the vote might split and believed he could survive while keeping the idol if events unfolded as he anticipated. He said he misread Tiffany’s intentions, and the votes ultimately sent him home. That is Hunter’s explanation of his own read, rather than Probst’s account of the episode. Parade published Hunter’s post-elimination interview.
What Probst said about promises to play an idol
Probst, identified by TV Insider as Survivor’s host and showrunner, said he does not treat a contestant’s stated intention to play an idol as a guarantee. “It’s extremely rare when a player will say in interview, ‘I am 100% playing this no matter what’ because the ‘no matter what’ is situational,” he said.

He described how a player’s thinking may shift once Tribal Council is underway: “You may get in there and suddenly something happens and you realize, ‘Oh, wait, not have to play this. I could hold it for another week.’” The point is about decisions changing as a player assesses the situation—not an official rule that a promise to play an idol has any binding force.
What “third” means in this story
Access Hollywood described Hunter as the third former Nami member in a row to join the jury. That wording refers to the sequence of jury exits; it does not establish that he was the third contestant of the season to leave with an idol. Access Hollywood’s coverage also noted that he kept the idol after misreading another player’s vote.

How the idol exits shaped the season
Hunter’s exit fit a wider pattern, but later season totals should not be confused with the episode 9 count. In its episode 11 coverage, TV Insider noted that Tevin, Hunter, and Tiffany had each been eliminated with an idol in their possession, and that another player found an idol and left that episode without using it. Probst said the pattern affected how remaining players thought about whether to play an idol. At the finale, he described five players leaving the game with idols in their pockets as his favorite moment of the season. TV Insider covered the episode 11 context; Inside Survivor reported Probst’s finale comments.

Holding an idol preserves the option to use it later, but that option has value only if the player’s read is right—or if another chance to play it arrives. Using it too early can surrender that future protection; keeping it when the votes are coming your way can mean leaving with it unused. Hunter’s account illustrates the risk: he believed he could survive the anticipated split, but his read of the vote was wrong.
