Jerrie Demasi is an Australian journalist and singer. The phrase “Nine News reporter by day, singer by night” comes from a 2014 profile, but it describes an earlier chapter: she joined Seven News in 2023 after about a decade at Nine. Her music career has included Perth acts Felix and, historically, Nylon.
Why Jerrie Demasi was called a “Nine News reporter by day, singer by night”
PerthNow used that description in a profile published on 12 January 2014. At the time, it reported that Demasi worked as a Nine News reporter and fronted the Perth band Felix. The phrase is a snapshot of her career then, not a current job description. PerthNow’s 2014 profile
Her journalism career: from Nine to Seven
After about a decade at Nine, Demasi joined Seven News in November 2023, The West Australian reported. The paper described her as a Perth-based crime reporter and wrote that she had spent a period reporting from the United States with her husband and fellow reporter, Michael Genovese. In the same interview, Demasi spoke about returning to crime reporting and wanting to shine a light on domestic violence. Williams Creative currently describes Demasi as a Seven News senior reporter and presenter. Its agency profile also lists recent presenting and event-hosting work, including the West Australian of the Year Awards and WA Young Achiever Awards in 2025, and the Police Excellence Awards in 2024. Her music career: Felix and Nylon
Felix
PerthNow’s 2014 profile identified Demasi as Felix’s lead singer and said the band had supported Ice Cube, De La Soul and Ne-Yo. Williams Creative’s later agency profile also says she fronts Felix, describes the group as a local touring act and lists performance credits including INXS, Thirsty Merc(y), Baby Animals and De La Soul. These are claims from the respective profiles; they do not establish that every act performed with the same Felix lineup or that the band currently has a particular schedule.
Nylon
The 2014 PerthNow article also reported that Demasi led Nylon, a five-woman vocal and dance act that performed at Future Music and Summadayze. That is historical context; it should not be read as confirmation of the group’s present lineup or activity.

More than a reporter and singer
Demasi’s work spans reporting, presenting, live performance and event hosting. Williams Creative says she studied Musical Theatre at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and lists MC engagements. Its profile is promotional material, so its descriptions and performance credits should be understood as agency-provided information rather than independent reporting.
PerthNow’s 2014 profile also described Demasi as a former Miss Universe WA finalist and reported that she won a 2013 Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance award in Western Australia for a video investigation into animal welfare in Cambodia.

A carefully attributed controversy from her Nine years
In a 2015 segment, ABC’s Media Watch examined Nine’s reporting around a child fatality and included criticism from parents and a school principal. The segment discussed Demasi’s on-air report, but separately described school interviews conducted by another reporter; it does not establish that Demasi alone made the decisions questioned. The segment also included Nine Perth news director Shaun Menegola’s response. He said the parents of the children interviewed had consented, said Nine would have withdrawn an interview if asked after a subsequent problem became known, and apologised for any grief caused. The criticism and the station’s response are both part of the account; neither should be omitted when describing the episode.
