In a December 2025 interview, Woodburne said she had no fixed plan for her next job, intended to stay in Australia and was looking forward to free time. She did not describe herself as retired.
What is The Imposter about?
The four-part family drama centers on Helen O’Riley, who owns a beachside hotel. Her three adult children want her to sell it, but family tensions deepen when a mysterious woman arrives claiming to be the daughter Helen gave up for adoption years earlier. Jackie Woodburne stars alongside Dannii Minogue and Kym Marsh.
Woodburne filmed the series immediately after Neighbours wrapped, making Helen her direct next role after years as Susan Kennedy.
Who does Jackie Woodburne play?
Helen is deliberately far removed from Susan. Woodburne described a woman shaped by disappointment and regret: critical, cold and judgmental, and at times cruel. The change felt strange to Woodburne, she told PerthNow, although knowing enough about Helen helped her make the transition.

Woodburne also drew on her own background for Helen’s accent. Born in Northern Ireland, she emigrated to Australia with her family at age three and grew up hearing her father’s Belfast accent. “I was born in Northern Ireland and even though I was only three when we emigrated to Australia, the accent is one that I’ve heard my whole life,” she told PerthNow.
She hoped viewers would accept the character on her own terms: “I just hope they go along for the rollercoaster ride that is The Imposter and don’t try to look for Susan. Trust me — she is nowhere to be found in Helen O’Riley!”

What did Woodburne say about life after Neighbours?
In her interview with Clare Rigden of PerthNow, published on 18 December 2025, Woodburne said she did not know what work would come next. She planned to stay in Australia over the summer and enjoy having free time. That was her outlook at the time of the interview, not a statement about her current work or a decision to leave acting.
Asked about retirement, she put it this way: “Retirement isn’t really something actors do. It’s just unemployment!” She also said she had caught up with former Neighbours colleagues and remained close to Alan Fletcher, who played her on-screen husband.

Woodburne described the Neighbours finale as “a very elegant resolution,” saying it ended with hope and positivity. Her move into The Imposter offered audiences a new character rather than an extension of Susan’s story.

The original Australian broadcast was scheduled on Ten across two nights: parts one and two on 21 December 2025, followed by parts three and four on 22 December. The production was reported as a UK-Australian collaboration involving Channel 5 and Network Ten. For Woodburne, the immediate next step after Neighbours was a family drama that asked her to leave the familiar Susan Kennedy behind.
