But his mother remained part of his life, and Foxx has said the grandparents who adopted him gave him the love and support he needed.
Who were Jamie Foxx’s parents and caregivers?
Foxx was born Eric Marlon Bishop in Terrell, Texas, to Darrell Bishop and Louise Annette Talley Dixon, according to Biography.com. Before he was a year old, his maternal aunt and uncle, Estelle and Mark, adopted him and raised him. The Hollywood Walk of Fame biography describes Estelle and Mark Talley as his mother’s adoptive parents.
That distinction explains why Foxx has called his caregivers his grandparents even though biographical accounts also identify them as his maternal aunt and uncle or his mother’s adoptive parents. They were the people who raised him day to day; the available accounts do not describe them as his biological grandparents.
What was his relationship with his mother like?
Being raised by Estelle and Mark did not mean Foxx had no relationship with his mother. Biography.com says Louise visited him while he was growing up. It also reports that he grew close to his stepfather, George Dixon, and his sisters, Deidra and DeOndra.

Foxx’s family arrangement was unusual, but the accounts point to a wider circle of family relationships rather than a simple absence of his parents. They do not provide a detailed account of how often his mother visited or describe the full nature of his relationship with his biological father.
How has Foxx described being raised by his grandparents?
In a recollection reported by CBS News, Foxx said: “All I knew was them as parents, and they were there 100%.” He credited Estelle with supporting his interest in music and making sure he received piano lessons. He recalled that she told him music would take him around the world.

Asked what his grandmother taught him, Foxx told CBS: “She just taught me to get out there, and don’t, like, don’t limit yourself.”
A 2011 Generations United profile, adapted from a White House feature, quoted Foxx reflecting on his adopted parents: “Any gaps—emotional gaps, spiritual gaps—my adopted parents filled them. So I didn’t skip a beat. I was never short on the love of a mother and father, though it came from an earlier generation of family.”

How did his upbringing shape his early interests?
The Hollywood Walk of Fame biography says Foxx began piano lessons at age five and sang in a church choir in Terrell. It also reports that he played football and basketball at Terrell High School and was the school’s first quarterback to pass for more than 1,000 yards. Those details offer a glimpse of the childhood Estelle’s encouragement helped make possible, though the specific milestones come from that biography.
Biography.com also recounts Foxx’s description of growing up in a town where Black and white residents were separated by railroad tracks, as well as a painful conversation with his father. That account is Biography.com’s report of Foxx discussing his past; it does not establish more about the day-to-day arrangement than the sources describe.
