Jane Curtin said she generally got along with her fellow original Saturday Night Live cast members, but had problems working with John Belushi. In a 2023 interview with PEOPLE, she attributed the strain to his addiction and the changes she saw in him—not to a romantic relationship or a general feud with the cast.
What Curtin said about Belushi
When Saturday Night Live launched in 1975, Curtin was one of its seven original cast members, alongside Belushi, Laraine Newman, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Garrett Morris and Chevy Chase. Asked about her relationships with her colleagues, she told PEOPLE: “I got along with everyone.” She then made a distinction: “But I did have problems with John.”
Curtin explained, “But that was because John wasn’t John. He was an addict.” Her account describes a difficult working relationship that she connected to addiction and its effects on Belushi. PEOPLE reported that Belushi died of a drug overdose in 1982, at age 33.
Why the SNL environment felt different to her
Curtin had recently married producer Patrick Lynch when she joined the show. She said her attention was on working as an actress, and she valued the life she had outside the studio: “I had a life — a dog, a husband, an apartment with a little garden. It was a life I really enjoyed.”

She contrasted that home life with the backstage partying she associated with the cast, describing Belushi as able to party while observing that cast members could be unhappy afterward. Curtin did not present the partying as something she shared or endorsed. What she relished was the broadcast itself: “Plus, the 90 minutes on the show were so exciting and adrenaline-pumping, I felt all the other stuff was self-indulgent and seemed hard.”
Later recollections about Belushi’s conduct
A 2026 Parade story revisited Curtin’s account and reported recollections she had given The New Yorker in 2019. Curtin recalled finding Belushi going through her purse in her dressing room and confronting producer Lorne Michaels over his behavior and missed rehearsals. As Parade presented it, Curtin remembered saying: “I found John going through my purse. He set your loft on fire. His behavior is reprehensible. He’s not coming to rehearsals or if he does come, he comes three hours late. Do something!” This is a retrospective recollection reported by Parade, not a contemporaneous transcript or independent verification of the events.

Where Curtin gave her account
PEOPLE published Gillian Telling’s exclusive interview on August 16, 2023; Telling reported that it was conducted on July 7, before the SAG-AFTRA strikes. It is the source for Curtin’s comments about getting along with the cast, her problems with Belushi, her home life and the intensity of the live show. The later purse and rehearsal anecdotes were reported by Parade, which linked them to Curtin’s 2019 New Yorker recollections. AOL republished the Parade story and is not a separate confirmation.
