J. Cole answered Kendrick Lamar’s verse on “Like That” with “7 Minute Drill,” a track released on April 5, 2024, as the closing song on his surprise album Might Delete Later. Two days later, Cole apologized to Lamar at Dreamville Festival in Raleigh, saying he regretted making the diss. Pitchfork later reported that the track had been removed from major streaming services; that 2024 report does not establish its availability on every service or format today.

What prompted “7 Minute Drill”?

On March 22, 2024, Kendrick Lamar appeared on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That.” His verse challenged the “big three” framing that grouped Lamar, J. Cole, and Drake. Coverage of the release described it as a challenge to that framing and helped set the context for Cole’s reply. Pitchfork reported on Cole’s response and its release; the Associated Press later explained the broader Drake–Lamar feud.

What did Cole release?

On April 5, Cole released the surprise album Might Delete Later. Its closing track, “7 Minute Drill,” responded to Lamar’s verse with competitive jabs at Lamar’s catalog and output. Those lines were diss-track rhetoric, not independently verified assessments of Lamar’s work. The Associated Press cautioned that diss tracks can use exaggeration or unsubstantiated claims for dramatic effect.

For the initial release and track context, see Pitchfork’s April 5 report and the Los Angeles Times coverage from the same day.

Why did Cole apologize?

At Dreamville Festival in Raleigh on April 7, Cole addressed Lamar directly and apologized for making the track. News reports said he regretted it and described it as lame; coverage also characterized him as conflicted about having made it. Pitchfork’s report on his festival remarks and the Los Angeles Times report on the apology provide the contemporaneous account. The available reporting cited here does not establish a verified verbatim transcript, so the remarks are summarized rather than presented as a direct quotation.

Was “7 Minute Drill” removed from streaming?

After the apology, Pitchfork reported in April 2024 that Cole had removed “7 Minute Drill” from major streaming services. That is a report about the track’s status at that time, not confirmation of its availability—or unavailability—on every platform or in every format in October 2026. The report does not establish the song’s current status: Pitchfork on the reported removal.

Did the apology end the wider feud?

No. Cole’s apology concerned his own track and conduct. It should not be read as ending the separate conflict between Drake and Lamar. The Associated Press’s overview treats that broader feud as a distinct story. In later retrospective coverage, Billboard Canada reported on Cole’s account of wanting to “say just enough” on “7 Minute Drill”: Billboard Canada’s 2026 coverage.
