How James Earl Jones became the voice of Darth Vader
Jones was cast to perform Darth Vader’s voice in Star Wars: A New Hope, released in 1977. Lucasfilm says he first crossed paths with the company earlier that year. The role became one of his most recognizable screen performances, even though it was his voice—not his face—that audiences associated with the character.
He reprised Vader in The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Rogue One and The Rise of Skywalker, as well as the television series Star Wars Rebels and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Lucasfilm also records his appearances as Vader in theme-park attractions. Its account of Jones’s work with the franchise traces the role across film, television and attractions.

From Darth Vader to Mufasa
Jones’s performance as Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King showed a strikingly different side of his voice. Where Vader’s delivery could sound imposing and threatening, Mufasa’s carried the authority and warmth of a father and king. Disney’s remembrance celebrates Jones for both characters and notes the contrast between them.
A career on stage as well as screen
Jones’s legacy was not confined to film and voice acting. He had a long career on stage, and the U.S. Senate’s 2022 entry in the Congressional Record notes that Broadway’s Cort Theatre was renamed the James Earl Jones Theatre in his honor. That recognition reflected a career spanning live theater as well as screen roles familiar to audiences around the world.
