The Book of Clarence is a real film, but it is not a real biblical book or a verified account of a historical figure named Clarence. Written and directed by Jeymes Samuel, the film tells a fictional story set around Jesus and the apostles.
Is there really a Book of Clarence in the Bible?
No. The Book of Clarence is the film’s title, not the name of a book in the Bible. Vanity Fair’s August 2023 feature explicitly notes that Clarence is not a book in the Bible.

Is Clarence a real person from the Bible?
Clarence is not identified as a biblical character in the sources available for the film. The story’s setting includes Jesus and the apostles, but its central character and personal journey are presented as fiction, not as a verified historical account.
What is the film about?
The Book of Clarence is written and directed by Jeymes Samuel, with LaKeith Stanfield playing Clarence. Sony’s official US title page describes Clarence as a streetwise man struggling to improve life for himself and his family. As he watches the rising Messiah and the apostles, he becomes drawn into the events around them.

- Streetwise but struggling, Clarence is trying to find a better life for himself, and prove that he?s not a nobody. Captivated by the power and glory of the rising Messiah and His apostles, he risks everything to carve his own path to a divine life, gets into trouble, but at last finds redemption and faith. Featuring new music by Jeymes Samuel, JAY-Z, Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi and more.
Samuel described Clarence as an everyman in a January 14, 2024 interview with NPR’s Ayesha Rascoe, saying the character represents someone with dreams and aspirations who could be a neighbor or family member. In a separate January 17, 2024 interview with The Credits, Samuel said he wanted to explore the perspective of an ordinary person nearby who doubts what he sees and goes on a journey of self-discovery and redemption.
Is it based on a true story?
The film uses a biblical-era setting and recognizable religious figures, but that does not make Clarence or his plot historically documented. Sony describes the film as a new take on the biblical epic; the director’s interviews frame Clarence as an invented everyman whose life intersects with events around Jesus. The distinction is between a story set against familiar Gospel events and a documented account of a person from the Bible.
