Star Trek: Lower Decks’ final season makes a persuasive case for being better than most adult comedies—not through a measurable industry ranking, but through the way it makes jokes do double duty. Its farce, science-fiction absurdity, and franchise-aware humor grow out of characters who have histories, make mistakes, and care about one another. That combination gives the ten-episode season a satisfying comic range and a real sense of payoff.
What makes Season 5’s comedy work
Season 5 is Lower Decks’ fifth and final season: ten episodes that began with a two-episode premiere on October 24, 2024, and concluded with the series finale on December 19, 2024. The show mixes comedy, animation, and science fiction in half-hour episodes. Its jokes don’t depend on a single formula. Workplace friction, genre parody, visual gags, and absurd sci-fi premises all have room to operate.
Premises that generate more than one kind of joke
The season’s official episode guide gives a good sense of that variety. “The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel” turns a space resort into a hunt for microscopic life; “A Farewell to Farms” sets Mariner’s preference for cold food against Migleemo’s cooking; and “Starbase 80?!” plays disinfectant gel against Mariner’s suspicions about a curse. Other episodes send Tendi into a pirate adventure, put the crew in the middle of peace talks, or stage an undercover “Girls Trip” on a pre-warp world. The situations are science-fictional, but their comic engines—social awkwardness, mismatched temperaments, workplace frustration—are familiar.
That flexibility matters. A single episode can send characters into a high-concept adventure and still find comedy in how they react to it. Rather than treating the sci-fi premise as a detachable backdrop, the show uses it to put recognizable flaws and relationships under pressure.

Jokes with character consequences
Boimler is an especially clear example. Creator and showrunner Mike McMahan says, “Boimler is a guy who makes mistakes but is always trying to be better, and that’s where a lot of his comedy comes from.” That distinction separates a recurring character joke from a static punchline: Boimler’s errors are funny partly because they collide with his effort to improve. His ambition and anxiety remain part of the joke, but they also give his choices continuity.
The same character-first approach gives Mariner’s irreverence and Tendi’s enthusiasm more than one comic use. Their habits can drive a farce, complicate a mission, or reveal how they handle a change in circumstances. The humor lands with more weight when the characters are not interchangeable vehicles for one-liners.

Why the final-season arc adds to the comedy
The season moves from self-contained comic setups toward the rift storyline and a multiverse finale. “Fissure Quest” advances that plot, while “The New Next Generation” brings the series to a close. The structure gives the season room for episodic absurdity without abandoning the larger question of what these characters have learned.
McMahan has described the finale’s multiverse story as a way to explore what the characters can learn about themselves. He also identifies friendship, support, and community as recurring concerns. Those are the showrunner’s stated intentions, not a guarantee that every scene succeeds; the critical point is that the finale’s scale is tied to character reflection rather than spectacle alone. McMahan also noted that the season’s antagonist did not intentionally tear open the multiverse, calling that unintended consequence of exploration a fit for Star Trek. The idea lets the show poke fun at grand sci-fi stakes while remaining recognizably within the franchise’s outlook.

How it compares with adult comedies
“Better than most adult comedies” is an opinion, not a statistic established by the available evidence. There is no controlled ranking here that measures Lower Decks against the entire adult-comedy field, and no single comparison show can stand in for that field. The fairest case is about what the season does well: it varies its joke construction, keeps comedy connected to character development, and balances irreverence with a warmer ensemble story.
It does ask more of viewers than a wholly self-contained comedy. Franchise knowledge can make some references and payoffs richer, so a newcomer may not catch every allusion. But the episode premises also support jokes about workplace dynamics, friendships, and personality clashes that do not require a deep command of Star Trek. The season’s tonal range is part of its appeal: it can be silly without making its characters feel disposable.

What reception figures can—and can’t—tell you
Rotten Tomatoes’ season page showed a 100% Tomatometer from 10 reviews and a 71% Popcornmeter from 50-plus ratings when accessed in 2026. Those are platform snapshots, not permanent scores or a controlled comparison with other adult comedies. They indicate favorable critical response in a small review set and a less uniformly enthusiastic audience rating; they cannot prove that the season is better than “most” shows in the category.
