Instead of Hollywood fame and self-destruction, it follows an ordinary Jewish American family through childhood, adulthood, grief, and change. If you want another animated comedy with emotional depth—but a more grounded, family-centered outlook—it is a natural next watch.
What is Long Story Short about?
Netflix describes the series as “an animated comedy about one family, over time.” The Schwooper siblings—Avi, Shira, and Yoshi—move from childhood into adulthood as the story revisits their wins, disappointments, joys, and compromises. Its focus is less on a single defining crisis than on the ways family members change, misunderstand one another, and remain connected.
The Schwoopers are a Jewish American family, and the series draws on Conservative Jewish traditions as part of their particular family life. That specificity matters: the show presents one family’s experience, not a claim to represent every Jewish person or household.
Is it like BoJack Horseman?
There is a clear creative lineage: Raphael Bob-Waksberg created both series, and each makes room for comedy alongside painful emotional material. But their subjects and concerns differ. BoJack Horseman centers a celebrity’s Hollywood career and its cycles of addiction and self-destructive behavior; Long Story Short centers siblings and the long history they share.

Bob-Waksberg put the tonal distinction this way: “It doesn’t get quite as zany, but it also doesn’t get quite as bleak.” He has also described a growing confidence in emotional directness: “One thing I’m proud of in my work is my increasing comfort with sincerity.” Those comments help explain why the new series can feel related to BoJack without simply repeating its mood or subject.
How does the time-jumping structure work?
The first season has 10 episodes, presented out of chronological order. Rather than moving cleanly from the siblings’ childhood to adulthood, the series shifts between periods, letting a moment from one age acquire a different meaning when the family appears at another. TIME reports that the episodes span from the early 2000s toward the present; the Los Angeles Times likens the effect to memory.

This structure suits a story about family because people often remember shared events differently and understand them anew as they grow older. Viewers looking for a tightly linear plot should expect a more associative rhythm, with the passage of time and changing relationships doing much of the connective work.
Does its Jewish American perspective limit its appeal?
The show’s cultural detail gives the family portrait texture rather than turning the series into a general account of Jewish life. Bob-Waksberg has said, “I never want to underestimate an audience’s ability to attach themselves to a story that feels specific and true.” That is a creative conviction, not audience-measurement data: the series’ reach beyond Jewish viewers cannot be established from the sources cited here.

For viewers who value stories rooted in a specific household and tradition, that point of view is a strength. The family’s particularity coexists with recognizable questions about love, grief, disappointment, and how siblings keep relating to one another across years.
What should you watch after BoJack Horseman?
Choose Long Story Short if what you want next is animation that treats comedy and emotional pain as compatible, but you are ready to leave celebrity satire behind. Its center of gravity is family: what siblings inherit from one another, what they misunderstand, and what time changes. Ben Feldman, who voices Avi, described the balance between specificity and recognition this way: “The beauty of this show, I think, is that it’s so incredibly specific. It feels like it’s about you when you watch it.”

It is not a substitute for BoJack Horseman’s Hollywood setting or its focus on addiction and self-sabotage. It is better understood as a related work from the same creator, shifting toward a more grounded, sincere portrait of ordinary lives unfolding over time.

As of Netflix Tudum’s current show information, Long Story Short is streaming on Netflix and has been renewed for a second season. Netflix has not announced the next season’s release date. The series won the 2026 Writers Guild of America Award for Animation for “Shira Can’t Cook,” written by Mehar Sethi.
