Loretta Lynn was the second of eight children, which means she had seven siblings. Three of her siblings—Jay Lee Webb, Peggy Sue, and Crystal Gayle—also became country recording artists.
How many siblings did Loretta Lynn have?
Lynn had seven siblings. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s educational biography identifies her as the second of eight children, and Lynn’s official biography says she grew up with seven brothers and sisters in a mountain cabin in Butcher Holler, Kentucky.

Who were Loretta Lynn’s brothers and sisters?
Yahoo Entertainment’s 2024 account names Lynn’s seven siblings as follows. The complete list is reported by that secondary source; the Hall of Fame separately corroborates three of the siblings who pursued country music.
- Melvin “Junior” Webb
- Herman Webb
- Willie “Jay” Lee Webb
- Donald Ray Webb
- Peggy Sue Wright
- Betty Ruth Hopkins
- Crystal Gayle
Which of her siblings became country musicians?
The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum identifies Jay Lee Webb, Peggy Sue, and Crystal Gayle as Lynn’s siblings who became country recording artists. Crystal Gayle is the best-known of the three; the Hall’s account is also useful for distinguishing these musical careers from the rest of the family’s story.

How did family shape Lynn’s musical upbringing?
Lynn’s official biography describes a family where music was part of everyday life in Butcher Holler. She recalled, “I thought everybody sang, because everybody up there in Butcher Holler did. Everybody in my family sang.” The quote captures the musical environment she grew up in without implying that every sibling pursued a professional career.
PBS’s American Masters transcript adds family details in Lynn’s own recollections and in comments by her son Ernest Ray. Lynn refers to “my oldest sister, Betty,” as well as her brother Jack and sister Cissy, and the transcript recounts the family’s move from Kentucky to western Washington. Jack is not Jay Lee Webb, the sibling who recorded country music.
