Liza Minnelli turned 79 on March 12, 2025, and marked the occasion by sharing a childhood birthday photo. In People’s March 13 report, her father, director Vincente Minnelli, is beside her as she blows out candles; her mother, Judy Garland, is described as seemingly off-camera. The headline’s reference to her parents does not mean both are visible in the picture.
What the birthday photo shows
People described the image as a childhood birthday scene: young Liza wears a party hat and blows out candles with Vincente Minnelli beside her. The report says Judy Garland was seemingly nearby but outside the frame. The photograph therefore evokes both parents in the birthday memory without visibly showing both of them.

People’s report reproduced the caption as: “Happy Birthday to me! Ha! Painting my face and fluffing my hair for my party tonight. Sharing a precious memory of Moi with Papa beside me and Mama near by. The Birthday flowers…presents all piling up— ah you shouldn’t have — but I’m damn glad you did!” This wording is attributed to People’s account of the post; the original Instagram post was not independently verified here. Why the family detail matters
Minnelli’s official Family & Friends Album identifies Vincente Minnelli as her father and Judy Garland as her mother, and says their artistry shaped her path. That context helps explain the significance of the “Papa” and “Mama” in the caption, while the photo itself shows her father beside her. Liza Minnelli’s official family album.
