Khakee: The Bengal Chapter is worth considering if you enjoy ensemble crime dramas and a strongly localized Kolkata setting. Its central story—a fictional IPS officer taking on a powerful don—uses familiar crime-and-power conflicts, while the cast, Bengali dialogue and setting supply much of its appeal. One contemporary review praised those strengths but also noted predictable turns and some underdeveloped threads.

What is Khakee: The Bengal Chapter about?

Set in early-2000s Bengal, the seven-episode Netflix drama follows IPS officer Arjun Maitra as he confronts Kolkata don Bagha amid gang conflict and a compromised system. The premise places law enforcement, criminal power and political pressure in the same orbit, without presenting the story as a documentary account of real events.

The series is entirely fictional, according to India Today’s review. Its Bengal setting and crime-world framework should therefore be read as dramatic storytelling, not as a verified portrayal of specific real political figures.

What makes the series stand out?

An ensemble-led story

The cast is one of the show’s clearest attractions. Netflix’s India listing names Jeet Madnani, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Saswata Chatterjee, Ritwik Bhowmik, Aadil Khan, Chitrangada Singh, Parambrata Chatterjee, Aakanksha Singh, Mimoh Chakraborty and Pooja Chopra; Netflix’s launch announcement also names Shraddha Das. India Today reviewer Zinia Bandyopadhyay praised the ensemble, though noted that some character threads could have been explored further.

Kolkata, Bengali dialogue and local texture

Netflix says the show was filmed extensively in Kolkata. The setting is more than a backdrop to the premise: the Bengali dialogue and the specificity of place help distinguish this chapter from a generic police-versus-gangster story. India Today singled out the Bengali dialogue as a strength. Calling the detailing “solid” is best understood as a critical reading of that setting and language, rather than an objective measure.

A familiar crime-drama engine

The hook is a determined police officer challenging a powerful criminal amid a compromised system. That gives the story clear stakes, but the framework will feel recognizable to viewers who have watched other crime dramas built around gang conflict and institutional power. India Today’s review praised the pace while also describing moments as predictable.

What did reviewers say?

In her March 20, 2025 review for India Today, Zinia Bandyopadhyay rated the series 3.5 out of 5 stars. She praised its cast, pacing and Bengali dialogue, while pointing to predictable moments, a sometimes jarring score and storylines that could have been developed further. She also described Parambrata Chatterjee’s appearance as brief.

The headline of Scroll’s review similarly frames the cast and detailing as strengths against a familiar plot. That headline supports the broad characterization, but not more specific claims about Scroll’s review.

Where and how can you watch it?

Khakee: The Bengal Chapter premiered on Netflix on March 20, 2025. Netflix’s India title page lists it as a 2025 drama with seven episodes. Availability and language options can vary by territory and change over time, so check the listing where you watch.

At the time of the current Netflix India listing, audio options include Bengali, English, Hindi audio description, Hindi original, Tamil and Telugu; English and Hindi subtitles are listed. These are catalogue details for India, not a guarantee that every option is available in every region.

Who is likely to enjoy it?

  • Consider it if you like ensemble crime dramas, Kolkata-set stories, Bengali dialogue and a brisk police-versus-criminal-power premise.
  • Temper expectations if you want a highly unpredictable plot, deeply developed space for every character or consistently unobtrusive scoring; the India Today review raised concerns in those areas.
  • Choose it as fiction, not as a factual account of Bengal’s political or criminal history.

Who made the series?

Neeraj Pandey is the creator and showrunner. Debatma Mandal and Tushar Kanti Ray directed the series; Pandey, Mandal and Samrat Chakroborty are credited as writers. Shital Bhatia produced it for Friday Storytellers.

Netflix announced the series on March 5, 2025. Its launch announcement described the Kolkata setting and the conflict between Arjun Maitra and Bagha as central to the story. Those promotional descriptions explain the show’s intended framing; the viewer’s decision may come down to whether the cast and regional detail outweigh the familiar crime-drama setup.
