The studio’s comments point to creative ambition—not a confirmed dispute or forced exit—as the reason it made REANIMAL. The Little Nightmares series continued separately with another developer.
Why did Tarsier Studios leave Little Nightmares?
Tarsier developed the first two Little Nightmares games, then parted ways with Bandai Namco and turned to a new property. In a GamesRadar+ interview, producer and Tarsier co-founder Andreas Johnsson said the team explored different paths and ideas. He described wanting audiences to anticipate the next Tarsier game as its own work, rather than simply as the next installment in a franchise.

That explanation supports a desire for creative range and a distinct studio identity. The available creator comments do not establish a single exclusive cause, such as a dispute, loss of creative control, or a forced departure. Embracer Group’s 2019 announcement that Tarsier had developed the Little Nightmares intellectual property from scratch provides background on the studio’s work, but does not show that the acquisition caused its later decision to move on: Embracer Group’s announcement.
What did the creators want to change with REANIMAL?
Tarsier’s comments describe REANIMAL as darker and grittier than its earlier work, with less of the fairytale framing associated with Little Nightmares. Narrative director Dave Mervik put the difference this way: “We don’t give people the safety net of the charm of Little Nightmares.” The remark signals a deliberate tonal shift, not that the two games share a story or franchise.

Is REANIMAL Little Nightmares 3?
No. REANIMAL is a separate game and is not an official Little Nightmares sequel. The series continued after Tarsier moved on: Supermassive Games developed Little Nightmares III, a separate project in the franchise. Tarsier’s new game gives the studio room to pursue its own property without replacing or continuing the Little Nightmares story.
