Ripa declined, turning the suggestion into a playful exchange about personal style—not a rule about what women should wear at any age.
What fashion advice did Lola give Kelly Ripa?
In an interview for People’s 2025 World’s Most Beautiful issue, Lola helped coordinate the mother-daughter looks and urged Ripa to step outside her comfort zone by trying a shorter gray pleated skirt. Ripa recalled: “Today was a special occasion. Lola asked me to put on [the] skirt [she’s wearing] and I said, ‘I just cannot,’” according to HOLA’s April 22, 2025 account.
Ripa joked, “Simply cannot. Past a certain age, you got to know when to hang up your disco shoes.” She explained that she generally prefers longer skirts, particularly because she spends much of her workday seated: “I really try not to, at this age, [wear mini skirts]—and especially since I spend most of my time sitting in a stool or a desk, I try to wear longer skirts.” Those were Ripa’s personal reasons for declining the skirt, not advice she offered to readers.
What did Kelly Ripa say about Lola’s style?
Ripa praised her daughter’s confidence and distinctive taste, describing Lola as “sophisticated,” “youthful and rock n’ roll,” and saying Lola wears things Ripa wished she had been brave enough to try at the same age. Ripa also recalled shopping at vintage stores when she was young and finding pieces she could make work, as HOLA reported.

The admiration runs both ways. In a September 2025 recap of the People interview, HOLA quoted Lola describing her mother’s look as chic and minimalistic, while noting its businesslike edge: “Chic is such a – I think that’s such a basic word to use, but you always have a touch of business as well in your outfits,” Lola said. She added, “It’s very chic and minimalistic, but in a very beautiful and authentic way to you.” The comments appear in HOLA’s September 10, 2025 recap.
Why the title can be read two ways
The documented mini-skirt story is Lola encouraging Kelly to wear a shorter skirt, with Kelly choosing not to. It is different from a separate Parade search-result excerpt that appears to describe Lola praising fashion advice Kelly gave her. That result does not disclose the advice itself, and the underlying page was not accessible; the two accounts should not be merged.

A 2022 Yahoo Entertainment search-result excerpt also says Lola regularly gave her mother style advice, including “Don’t Wear That!” Because the page itself was unavailable, that excerpt offers limited corroboration rather than detail about the 2025 photoshoot exchange.

The clearest takeaway is that mother and daughter enjoy different fashion instincts and talk about them openly: Lola encouraged an experiment, while Kelly chose what felt comfortable for her. Ripa has also said Lola borrows items from her wardrobe, including tank tops, T-shirts, blazers, jewelry, belts, and handbags. Neither the skirt anecdote nor their reciprocal compliments establish a universal rule about age, hemlines, or personal style.
