Yes—but with an important qualification. In the 2026 California insurance trial over losses tied to House of Cards, Kevin Spacey acknowledged that his December 16, 2017 discharge summary listed “sexual compulsive behavior” and said he had no medical basis to challenge the diagnoses. He also said he did not agree with the diagnosis and disputed statements in the records that he said were inaccurate.
What Spacey said about the discharge summary
Spacey testified that he voluntarily entered inpatient treatment at The Meadows in Arizona in 2017. Reading from the discharge psychiatric summary, he cited the listed diagnoses as “Other specified obsessive and related behaviors, sexual compulsive behavior, generalized anxiety disorder.” The summary was dated December 16, 2017, according to courtroom reporting by Rolling Stone Canada.
Asked whether he had “any medical basis to challenge the diagnoses,” Spacey answered, “No.” That did not mean he endorsed the diagnosis as his own view: he said he did not agree with it, denied saying that one recorded behavior was “touching in public without permission,” and rejected being framed as a sex addict. He described his reason for seeking treatment as: “I went there to try to help myself.”
The distinction is between what the document listed and what Spacey said he believed. The available trial reporting describes his testimony and quotes the discharge summary; it does not provide the full medical record or a complete transcript.

What the House of Cards insurance trial was about
Media Rights Capital (MRC), the producer of House of Cards, sought insurance recovery for losses it said followed Spacey’s removal from the show in 2017. MRC argued that his sickness prevented him from completing his work and caused covered losses. Insurer Fireman’s Fund argued that public allegations and reputational fallout, rather than an incapacitating illness, drove the production decision.
The central question was not simply whether the discharge summary contained a diagnosis. Under the policy dispute as reported, MRC had to show that sickness was the “most important and predominant cause” of its losses. The jury found that MRC had not proved that point and ruled for Fireman’s Fund. Rolling Stone Canada reported a 10-2 jury vote for the insurer; Variety Australia also reported the trial result.

What the verdict did—and did not—decide
The verdict resolved the insurance-causation question in Fireman’s Fund’s favor. It did not determine whether every statement in Spacey’s medical records was accurate, nor was it a clinical ruling about his health. Jurors interviewed after the verdict described reputational damage and bad publicity as more important causes of the production losses. Juror Olivia Osborne told Rolling Stone Canada: “I didn’t believe his sickness was the most ‘predominant’ cause for the loss. I think it was reputational harm and bad PR.” That is her account of the jury’s reasoning, not a medical finding.

The reported $29.5 million figure refers to MRC’s insurance claim, not an award against Spacey. Separately, MRC had previously received a $31 million arbitration award against him; Rolling Stone Canada and Variety Australia reported that it was later reduced to $1 million in a settlement tied to his cooperation in the insurance matter. These amounts belong to distinct disputes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
