After graduating from UCLA in 2019, Katelyn Ohashi explored writing, public speaking and performance beyond competitive gymnastics. In 2026, she returned to elite competition, adding a new chapter to that life—not erasing the years she spent finding her footing outside the sport.
What changed after UCLA?
Ohashi graduated from UCLA in 2019 with a degree in gender studies. The university says she earned 11 perfect 10s during her Bruin career. Her most widely seen UCLA moment was a floor routine that scored 10.0 on January 12, 2019. By January 18, UCLA reported that the routine had generated more than 40 million views. Those figures describe the moment as UCLA recorded it in January 2019, not a current view count. UCLA’s January 2019 feature gives the routine and its context.
Leaving college competition also meant considering who she was apart from athletic results. In a 2022 Los Angeles Times interview, Ohashi said, “Every athlete goes through a phase where it feels like they are their sport.” Her life after UCLA was not a single, settled career switch; it included creative projects, performance and public appearances.
How did she explore work beyond competition?
Performance and public speaking
In 2021, Ohashi appeared on Simone Biles’ Gold Over America Tour. The Los Angeles Times later described the experience as reconnecting her with the performer side of gymnastics. In 2022, UCLA named her its College commencement speaker. Speaking about the address, Ohashi said, “I hope to inspire them to embrace challenges, love themselves and find their voices.” UCLA’s announcement covers the commencement role.

Poetry and a planned film
In 2022, Ohashi told the Los Angeles Times that she was writing poetry with friends and working to raise funds for a planned short animated film she intended to direct. That report describes a project in development at the time; it does not establish that the film was completed. The interview also captured her effort to build a quieter life and think through the pressure of defining herself by sport. Read the 2022 interview in the Los Angeles Times.
A named poetry collection
An October 2024 episode description from On Her Mark names Ohashi’s poetry collection, Every Time, I Always Would, and discusses poetry, fashion design and the Gold Across America tour. The source establishes the title and subjects discussed, but not the book’s sales, reviews or current availability. The October 2024 episode description is a place to find the reference.

What does her 2026 gymnastics return mean?
Ohashi returned to elite competition in 2026. USA Gymnastics lists her as a senior athlete with Pacific Reign Gymnastics and records a tie for third on beam at the American Classic, followed by sixth on beam and seventh on floor at the U.S. Classic. Her USA Gymnastics profile lists the results.
In July 2026, the Los Angeles Times reported that Ohashi was pursuing the possibility of competing at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. That is an aspiration, not an Olympic qualification or a prediction that she will make the team. In discussing the return, she said, “I want to have fun with it.” The distinction matters: a return to elite meets is a new competitive chapter, while the outcome of a possible Olympic bid remains undecided. The July 2026 report describes her stated ambition.
