She connected that thought experiment to love, insecurity and the misunderstandings that can arise between people who care deeply for one another. It is her stated original premise, not a rule about what listeners must hear in the song.
What “Running Up That Hill” means
In a November 1985 interview with Tony Myatt, Bush described the song as being about love’s power and the intensity created between two people. That intensity can be comforting and tender, she said, but it can also feel threatening or dangerous. The song’s imagined exchange of places offers a way for each partner to experience the relationship from the other’s point of view.
Bush also connected the idea to subtle differences between men and women that can cause trouble in a relationship. The exchange is not presented as a practical solution so much as a dramatic wish: if the two people could inhabit each other’s perspective, perhaps they could understand what words and assumptions leave unclear. Why the song is also called “A Deal with God”
“A Deal with God” was the song’s working title, and Bush told Emma Barnett in 2022 that she continued to think of it by that name. She said the record company was concerned that a religiously worded title might be sensitive or could affect radio play. The released title became “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God),” retaining the phrase as a subtitle. [Official Charts Company interview with Kate Bush, 2022]

Did Kate Bush say what the lyrics mean?
Yes: in 2022, Bush reiterated that the original idea was a man and woman swapping places to see what life felt like from the other side. But she also explicitly left room for personal interpretation, saying she likes listeners to take from a song what they want. Her explanation clarifies the starting point without closing off other readings.
That distinction matters when discussing the lyrics: the song gives listeners an emotional scenario rather than a single required interpretation. A listener might focus on empathy, the risks of intense love, or the frustration of not being understood. Those responses can coexist with Bush’s account of how she began writing it.
