In Netflix’s 2024 thriller Don’t Move, Kelsey Asbille had to make a character’s fear, grief and determination readable as her body progressively stopped responding. The challenge was not simply holding still: it was expressing an intense inner struggle through shrinking physical choices, while the camera and Finn Wittrock’s performance helped shape how the audience experienced each change.
Why was the role so physically demanding for Kelsey Asbille?
Asbille plays Iris, a grieving woman injected with a fictional paralytic agent. As the drug takes effect, Iris loses mobility while trying to survive. That premise gave Asbille a demanding acting constraint: she had to convey changing emotions and intentions while being able to move less and less.
“The script lays out the stages of paralysis, but there’s an emotional experience and internal struggle that you have to convey, and you are so limited physically. That was the challenge, and it was fun to figure it out together,” Asbille told Netflix Tudum.
The script could establish what Iris’s body could no longer do, but it could not determine on its own how that restriction would register on screen. Asbille said she worked the problem out collaboratively with directors Brian Netto and Adam Schindler. The performance had to make small changes meaningful: the audience needed to follow Iris’s fear and resolve even when she could not rely on broad gestures or movement.

How did Asbille prepare for the physical work?
Asbille trained with Eric Johnson, focusing on endurance rather than simply building muscle. She described the goal as sustaining isolated movements, especially in the film’s more extreme environments. That preparation matched the role’s particular demands: controlled physical effort and the ability to repeat limited actions, rather than a conventional display of strength.
In Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer, Asbille also connected the physical premise to Iris’s emotional state: “To me, the movie is a conversation with herself about the will to live.” She said the filmmakers could “show her existential paralysis physically rather than just metaphorically.” The injected paralysis is a fictional plot device; the emotional parallel is the film’s way of giving grief and loss of will a visible form.

How did the camera reinforce Iris’s loss of movement?
Asbille said she relied on the directors and cinematographer Zach Kuperstein, noting that the camera mirrors Iris’s movement. Wittrock described the visual pattern in an interview with ComingSoon: when Iris cannot move, the shots are stationary; as she regains mobility, the camera moves more.
This makes the film’s form part of the performance challenge. Iris’s restricted body is not only something Asbille must convey; the framing also limits the viewer’s visual movement, then changes as her capacity changes. The approach aligns the audience’s experience with Iris’s physical condition without requiring the film to explain every shift in dialogue.

What did Finn Wittrock find challenging about Asbille’s performance?
Wittrock, who plays Richard, said Asbille had to communicate with “hardly any ability to use her body, which is generally what we use to express ourselves.” He added: “Watching the movie, I was really so impressed by how much she was able to communicate.”
Wittrock approached Richard with a different audience-facing aim: he wanted viewers to stay in the moment instead of anticipating what would happen next, so the next event could still surprise them. That helps explain why the film’s tension depends on both sides of the central encounter: Asbille’s restrained, increasingly difficult physical performance and Wittrock’s effort to keep the audience uncertain about what comes next.

Why did the stillness concern the filmmakers?
Producer Sam Raimi said he worried that audiences might become restless because the script asked the lead actor to be still for so many minutes. The concern points to the film’s central balancing act: reduced movement had to remain dramatically active. Iris’s changing emotional state, the danger around her and the camera’s response all had to sustain attention while her physical options narrowed.
How long is Don’t Move?
Netflix Tudum describes the thriller as unfolding over roughly the same span of time experienced by its characters. The article gives an approximate runtime of 85 minutes, while the Netflix display shown there lists 1 hour 32 minutes. Netflix Tudum’s overview lists the film as streaming on Netflix; availability can vary by territory and change over time.
