Kendrick Lamar and Taylour Paige’s “We Cry Together” is a short film built around their song from Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. Released September 1, 2022, it stages the two performers as a couple in a fierce argument, captured in a single take with live vocals.
What happens in the short film
The film puts the song’s confrontation into a domestic scene: Paige and Lamar play a romantic couple trading pointed verbal jabs. The argument escalates into what contemporary coverage described as a fiery, apparently relationship-ending fight. That is the scene the film presents; it should not be treated as evidence about the performers’ real lives.
The staging gives the song a visual form rather than establishing a definitive explanation of what it means. The available reporting describes the scene and performance but does not provide a single authoritative statement of the filmmakers’ intent.
How it connects to the song and album
“We Cry Together” is a track by Kendrick Lamar and Taylour Paige on Lamar’s album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, dated May 13, 2022 in Apple Music’s album listing. Apple Music also lists the short film among the related music videos. Lamar and Paige are both the song’s performers and the film’s stars.

Why it is called a short film
The release is more than an audio track accompanied by a series of separate scenes: the uninterrupted take and live vocals make the argument feel like a continuous performance. Pitchfork described it as a six-minute video that brings the theatrical album song into a visual scene. The film’s core effect comes from that sustained encounter between the two performers, not from a separate plot that explains the song.
For viewers looking for the “We Cry Together” music video, this is the official short-film treatment of the album track, released in 2022. The release date of the film is distinct from the album date, and its March 2020 recording predates both.
