Kate Winslet said she rejected a suggestion to sit up straighter during a bikini scene in Lee—a posture change that could make her stomach look flatter. “So you can’t see my belly rolls? Not on your life! It was deliberate, you know?” she recalled answering. Her account, reported by ITV from an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, was about preserving how she appeared in the scene, not concealing her body.
What happened during the Lee bikini scene?
Winslet was playing photographer Lee Miller in the film when she was seated on a bench in a bikini. She said a crew member suggested, “You might want to sit up straighter”. Winslet’s response was: “So you can’t see my belly rolls? Not on your life! It was deliberate, you know?” The quoted exchange is relayed by ITV from Winslet’s Harper’s Bazaar UK interview; the original magazine page was not independently reviewed.
In a separate recollection of the moment, TIME reported in 2024 that Winslet wanted to be the “softest physical version” of herself in Lee. When someone told her to suck in her stomach and sit up straight, she recalled answering, “You think I’m not aware you can see that? I just went, ‘I’m all good.’” The accounts share the same central point: she knew how she looked and chose not to change her posture to make her body appear slimmer.
Why Winslet said she wanted to look real on screen
Winslet described visible signs of age and life as something she values rather than a flaw to cover. “The opposite. I take pride in it because it is my life on my face, and that matters. It wouldn’t occur to me to cover that up,” she said in the interview quoted by ITV.

That attitude fits the film’s subject. Lee is a feature film about Lee Miller, the American photographer who became a correspondent for British Vogue during World War II. Winslet worked to bring Miller’s story to the screen over nearly a decade, according to the Associated Press.
How the Lee anecdote differs from the Mare of Easttown dispute
Winslet had previously spoken about resisting image changes on a different production. In a 2021 interview about HBO’s Mare of Easttown, she said director Craig Zobel offered to make her body look more flattering in a sex scene. She refused, saying, “Don’t you dare.” She also objected to alterations made to the promotional poster, asking, “Guys, I know how many lines I have by the side of my eye, please put them all back,” as reported by The Guardian.

Those are separate incidents, not one ongoing dispute: on Lee, Winslet described rejecting posture advice during a bikini scene; on Mare of Easttown, she described refusing an offered edit and challenging changes to a poster. Together, they show a consistent public stance against making her appearance look more conventionally flattering through those particular changes.
