Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance opposite Maya Rudolph in the opening sketch of Saturday Night Live on November 2, 2024, three days before Election Day. Harris played herself while Rudolph reprised her impression of the Democratic candidate.
What happened in the SNL cold open?
The appearance came in the final SNL episode before the November 5 election. In the mirror-themed sketch, Rudolph played Harris getting ready for a campaign appearance; the real Harris then appeared as her reflection. The official clip is titled “2024 Pre-Election Cold Open – SNL”. Its description sets up CNN’s Kaitlan Collins checking in with the Harris and Donald Trump campaigns.

The audience greeted Harris with sustained cheers. She offered Rudolph’s character encouragement, saying, “And I’m just here to remind you, you got this.” The sketch also landed on a campaign-trail catchphrase—“Keep Kamala and carry-on-ala”—before both women delivered the show’s familiar “Live from New York” opening line. The Associated Press reported on the scene and its lines.
The garbage-truck joke
The cold open also referred to Donald Trump’s recent photo opportunity in a garbage truck in Green Bay, Wisconsin. That moment had followed President Joe Biden’s remarks about Trump supporters, a connection described in CBS News’ account from the Associated Press.

Harris’s New York stop was not announced in advance. After a campaign stop in Charlotte, North Carolina, her plane was expected to continue to Detroit. Aides told reporters in flight that it would land elsewhere, and the campaign confirmed the SNL appearance shortly before the live broadcast.
According to AP, Harris reached 30 Rockefeller Plaza shortly after 8 p.m., rehearsed briefly, and left after the opening segment to continue to Michigan. The episode aired live at 11:30 p.m. Eastern. AP described the cameo as an effort to generate buzz and reach a nationwide audience; that explanation does not establish that it changed voter behavior.

How long was the cameo?
Published accounts give different durations. CBS News, citing AP, described it as about two minutes, while PolitiFact called it 90 seconds. The figures may reflect different ways of counting the cameo and the surrounding sketch, so neither is a definitive runtime.
How did the sketch play with Maya Rudolph’s impression?
Rudolph first portrayed Harris on SNL in 2019 and returned to the role during the 2024 election season. The cold open used the contrast between the real candidate and the familiar impression: Harris appeared across from Rudolph, while jokes drew on Harris’s laugh and campaign language. Rudolph’s portrayal also invoked “Momala,” the affectionate name Harris’s stepchildren use for her.
Harris had praised Rudolph on The View the previous month, saying, “Maya Rudolph — I mean, she’s so good,” and complimenting the suit and jewelry in the impression, according to AP.
What was the equal-time dispute?
Before the sketch aired, FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr criticized the appearance as an attempt to evade the agency’s equal-time rule. PolitiFact reported that NBC notified the FCC within a day and later gave Trump campaign airtime after a NASCAR race and during other NBC programming.
Rank #4
This was a reported regulatory dispute and broadcaster response. The cited coverage does not establish that a court or the FCC adjudicated the appearance as a violation.

SNL has a long history of political figures appearing on the program. AP points to politicians including Donald Trump, who hosted in 2015, and to election-season appearances by Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin. It characterized a candidate’s appearance this close to Election Day as unusual; the examples are historical context, not a standardized comparison of political cameos.
