The Prince and Princess of Wales responded to the April 13, 2024 stabbing attack at Westfield Bondi Junction in Sydney with a joint message expressing shock and sadness, offering sympathy to those affected, and praising emergency responders. Their statement did not discuss a motive.
What William and Catherine said
The couple’s message read: “We are shocked and saddened by the terrible events in Sydney earlier today. Our thoughts are with all those affected, including the loved ones of those lost and the heroic emergency responders who risked their own lives to save others.” It was signed “W & C.” Vanity Fair reported the statement, as did Evoke.
The words were a condolence message: they recognized those affected and bereaved and thanked responders for their actions. The couple did not identify a motive or characterize the attack as terrorism.
When and where the attack happened
The attack took place on April 13, 2024, at Westfield Bondi Junction, a shopping centre in Sydney. The couple’s statement referred to events in Sydney “earlier today,” placing their response on the day of the attack.

Immediate news reports differed in their casualty totals. Without a dated primary-source tally, those early figures should not be treated as a definitive final count; the royal statement itself gave no numbers. Vanity Fair and The Independent reported on the response and the incident.

William and Catherine spoke together, and their message was separate from a response issued by King Charles. The Independent quoted Charles saying that he and Queen Camilla were “utterly shocked and horrified,” expressing sympathy to victims’ families and thanking first responders. Neither statement should be conflated with the other.

Vanity Fair noted that the Waleses’ message was their first public statement since Catherine announced her cancer diagnosis in March 2024. That is timing context; it does not establish why or how the couple decided to issue this particular response.
