Judge Joe Brown was arrested in Memphis on March 24, 2014, after a contempt finding during a child-support hearing in Shelby County Juvenile Court. He was sentenced to five days in jail, but his first detention lasted only a few hours. Brown later surrendered and served the sentence in August 2015.
Why was Judge Joe Brown arrested?
The arrest followed a contempt finding during a child-support hearing at Shelby County Juvenile Court in Memphis. Contemporary reports said Brown challenged Magistrate Harold “Hal” Horne and the court’s authority. Court officials said Brown yelled during the proceeding; Brown said he had been trying to help a woman with her child-support matter and believed the case should be dismissed. ABC News reported the arrest and five-day sentence on March 24, 2014, while CBS News, carrying Associated Press reporting, described the courtroom dispute.

How long was Judge Joe Brown in jail?
The court imposed a five-day sentence, but Brown’s initial 2014 detention was brief: he was released on his own recognizance after a few hours. ABC News described the detention as a few hours; CBS/AP reported that he was released at about 7 p.m. after roughly three hours. Those reports concern the initial arrest, not the later service of the sentence. ABC News reported his release on March 25, 2014.
Did Judge Joe Brown later serve the sentence?
Yes. In August 2015, Brown surrendered to Memphis authorities and served the five-day sentence arising from the 2014 contempt case. ABC News reported his surrender and jail term on August 28, 2015.

What did Brown and the court say about the case?
Brown disputed the magistrate’s authority and objected to having his liberty detained. His lawyer, Taylor Eskridge, argued that the charges and sentence were not lawful. Court officials took the contrary position: the court clerk told ABC News the magistrate had authority to sentence Brown. These are the positions reported at the time; the cited accounts do not independently resolve the legal dispute.
Brown described his reaction after his initial release by saying, “I’m a little hot under the collar.” In an ABC News interview, he said, “I was not happy to have my liberty detained even for 30 seconds. That’s precious.” ABC News published his account on March 25, 2014.

Do the reports establish other scandals or legal problems?
The reporting cited here documents this contempt case. It does not establish a broader series of scandals or other legal cases attributable to Brown. Contemporaneous coverage also noted his public profile and candidacy for Shelby County district attorney, but speculation that the courtroom incident was political theater is not proof that it was staged.
Brown’s syndicated courtroom television show ran from 1998 to 2013, according to contemporaneous ABC News and CBS/AP coverage. That career context explains why the arrest drew attention, but it does not change what the sources establish about the case itself.
