John Tesh credits his wife, actress Connie Sellecca, with helping him keep searching for care after his prostate cancer returned. In a November 2025 interview with ABC News, he said, “If you unplug that piece from my journey, I’m not here.” The account behind that emotional statement is specific: Sellecca helped connect him with specialists when scans raised concern in 2017, and supported him through treatment. It is his account of her role—not proof that one person or one decision alone determined the outcome.
What happened after John Tesh’s diagnosis?
Tesh was 63 when he was diagnosed with stage III prostate cancer in 2015. A routine physical led to further examination and a biopsy. UT MD Anderson Cancer Center says his PSA level was not substantially above normal, but his doctor felt something suspicious during a digital rectal exam and referred him for further evaluation.
Tesh has recalled that doctors warned the tumor might be inoperable and estimated he had about 18 months to live. That was an estimate given to him in his individual case, not a general prognosis for prostate cancer. He underwent a radical prostatectomy in August 2015; his recovery was complicated by an intestinal blockage treated with a nasogastric tube. How did Connie Sellecca help him reach MD Anderson?
In 2017, an MRI showed possible cancer spread to pelvic lymph nodes. Sellecca contacted two longtime friends, who directed the couple to MD Anderson. Tesh later recalled their advice: “You gotta come here to MD Anderson,” as reported in a Yahoo News reproduction of PEOPLE’s exclusive.

At MD Anderson, Tesh consulted Christopher Logothetis, M.D., and underwent robotic lymph-node surgery with Brian Chapin, M.D. The cancer center says the operation confirmed that cancer had spread to the nodes. Tesh described Sellecca’s advocacy in a 2024 AARP interview: “having an advocate — my wife was great at this.”
Her practical role was to press for another avenue of care and help him connect with specialists. The story does not establish that she alone saved his life; Tesh’s own wording expresses how central her support felt to him during a frightening and complicated experience.

What treatment did Tesh receive?
MD Anderson reports that after the lymph-node surgery, Tesh had four rounds of chemotherapy followed by androgen deprivation therapy, a form of hormone treatment. He described nausea during chemotherapy and weight, muscle, and energy loss with hormone therapy. Those are his reported experiences, not a forecast of what another patient will experience or a recommended treatment sequence for everyone.
The center’s account describes continued scans and monitoring. In an ABC News report published November 21, 2025, Tesh said his condition was stable while he continued monitoring with his doctors. That is a dated public update and should not be read as a statement of his status today.

What his story does—and does not—say about prostate cancer
Tesh’s diagnosis followed an abnormal finding on examination even though, according to MD Anderson, his PSA was not substantially above normal. His experience illustrates that the PSA result was not the only information his doctor considered in his particular evaluation. It does not establish a screening rule or tell readers how to interpret their own test results.
ABC News reported that the American Cancer Society recommends men ages 55–69 discuss prostate cancer screening with their doctors. That is general screening context, not personal medical advice. Screening decisions depend on individual circumstances; a clinician can explain the potential benefits, limitations, and next steps for a specific person.
