The figures match at the displayed whole-number level: the Tomatometer reflects 374 critic reviews, while the Popcornmeter reflects 5,000+ verified audience ratings.
What the matching Joker 2 scores mean
“Complete agreement” describes the two displayed percentages, not a consensus shared by every critic and viewer. Rotten Tomatoes calculates the Tomatometer from positive reviews by approved critics and the Popcornmeter from user ratings. Those are different groups and inputs; equal percentages do not mean critics and audience members gave identical opinions.
The current figures are a snapshot, not permanent scores. Rotten Tomatoes says scores can change as review counts fluctuate. The audience total is displayed as “5,000+,” not an exact count.

Rotten Tomatoes’ pages, checked October 8, 2026, show a wider gap between the original film’s critic and audience scores than between the sequel’s.

On these displayed figures, the sequel scores lower with both critics and users than the original. The score comparison does not explain why reception differed.
How Rotten Tomatoes’ audience score works
Rotten Tomatoes announced on August 14, 2024, that its Audience Score for new films would use ratings from users whose ticket purchases it could confirm, labeling them “Verified Ratings.” The announcement said purchases could be verified through Fandango by matching account email addresses. The sequel’s current page identifies its audience ratings as verified.

Verification describes the platform’s ticket-purchase check; it does not make the Popcornmeter equivalent to the critic-based Tomatometer. Each meter still represents a different kind of submission.
How the score compares with Joker 2’s opening weekend
Rotten Tomatoes’ October 4–6, 2024 opening-weekend table also listed 31% for both meters. That historical snapshot matches the current displayed percentages, but it is not the source for today’s review and rating totals.

The same opening-weekend article reported a D CinemaScore from surveyed moviegoers. CinemaScore is a separate audience survey measure, not another name for Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter; its grade should not be treated as a description of what each Rotten Tomatoes user thought.

Rotten Tomatoes’ current critics consensus reads: “Joaquin Phoenix’s eponymous Joker takes the stand in a sequel that dances around while the story remains still, although Lady Gaga’s wildcard energy gives Folie á Deux some verve.” This is Rotten Tomatoes’ editorial consensus, not a statement attributed to a named individual critic. Individual early reviews at the Venice festival also varied, with some critics criticizing the sequel and others praising its ingenuity and risk-taking; neither those reviews nor the consensus represents every critic’s view.
