Jenifer Lewis said she fell about 10 feet from a lodge deck in Tanzania’s Serengeti in November 2022, landing in a rocky ravine. She also recalled hearing a lion roar while her friend went to get help—not seeing a lion or being attacked by one.
What Lewis said happened in the Serengeti
In an interview with Robin Roberts, Lewis recounted that she was traveling after Black-ish ended. She said it was after sunset, the lodge grounds were pitch black, and she had not been given a tour of the property. After seeing an infinity pool, she stepped onto a deck. In her account, part of the deck was not sectioned off and there was no caution sign. The Independent’s 2024 report reproduces her description of falling about 10 feet into a dry ravine with rocks and boulders.
Those details about the deck and the lack of a barrier or warning are Lewis’s account. The available coverage does not include an incident investigation or property records that independently establish what safeguards were present.
What she recalled about the lion
Lewis said her right hip took the impact and her shoulder struck a stone. She recalled being unable to move at first and calling for her friend Lori. As Lori ran to seek help, Lewis said, she heard a lion roar. Her account describes hearing a roar; it does not establish that a lion approached her or attacked her. (The Independent, 2024)

Rescue, treatment and rehabilitation
PEOPLE reported that a Doctors Without Borders team came to assist Lewis and that she was airlifted to Kenya for treatment. In a later conversation on the IMO podcast, Lewis described undergoing 12 hours of surgery at Aga Khan University Hospital, receiving three blood transfusions, and spending six nights in intensive care. The podcast transcript mirror also records her saying she could not walk for 13 months. These medical and recovery details are Lewis’s recollections in that later conversation, not information established here through medical records. (PEOPLE; IMO podcast episode)
What is known—and what is not
The account places the fall in November 2022 at a lodge in Tanzania’s Serengeti, during a trip after Black-ish. Coverage relays Lewis’s description of the fall, the deck, and the roar, but the sources cited do not provide a precise lodge name, primary medical documents, or lodge incident records. The incident is best described as Lewis’s account rather than as an independently documented finding about the property.
