1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn Love Island USA Season 7, Amaya Espinal called herself a “sensitive gangster” after fellow islanders criticized her for expressing romantic feelings too intensely and too quickly. She was not conceding that her emotions were a flaw: in the confrontation, she said, “I view it as a strength.”
That is what makes the phrase resonate beyond the villa. It names a refusal to hide emotional openness just because someone else finds it uncomfortable. Amaya’s words are hers; the “and so am I” in this title is a personal identification, not a claim that her experience and every other person’s are the same.
What Amaya meant by “sensitive gangster”
Amaya used the phrase as a self-description, not as the name of a psychological type. In a post-show interview covered by Marie Claire on July 16, 2025, she explained it as “someone is very in touch with their feelings and isn’t afraid to emote.” That is Amaya’s own account of the phrase, not a clinical definition or a universal label.
The two words hold a productive tension. “Sensitive” suggests emotional awareness and willingness to feel; “gangster” adds a note of toughness and self-possession. Put together, the phrase rejects the assumption that showing emotion means surrendering strength.

Why she said it on Love Island
The moment came amid criticism from other islanders that Amaya was coming on too strong and moving too quickly with her feelings. In that setting, “sensitive gangster” was a response to a social judgment: she would not treat emotional expression as something shameful or weak. A transcript of the Episode 26 exchange records her saying, “I view it as a strength.”
That context matters. Detached from the disagreement, the phrase can sound like a playful slogan. In the villa, it was also a boundary: other people could find her approach intense, but that did not require her to pretend she felt less than she did. The scene captures a tension many people recognize—one person’s candor can feel like too much to someone else, without either reaction serving as a diagnosis.

What “and so am I” can mean
To identify with Amaya’s phrase is not to claim her story. It can mean recognizing the pull to make feelings smaller so they seem easier for other people to accept, and deciding that openness is not automatically a liability. For me, “sensitive gangster” offers a compact way to hold both parts: tenderness and backbone.
That identification does not make every expression of emotion right for every moment or relationship. It makes room for a more useful question than “Am I too sensitive?”: can I express what I feel honestly while still listening to the people around me? Emotional openness and consideration are not opposites.

Amaya’s Season 7 ending
Amaya and Bryan Arenales won Love Island USA Season 7. The Associated Press reported that the winning couple received a $100,000 prize and that Arenales chose to split it evenly with Espinal. The outcome gives the story a happy finale, but it is separate from what “sensitive gangster” means: a prize cannot measure the phrase’s reach or establish how viewers responded to it.
