Eric Morecambe and Nick Owen are the clearest answers to who Luton Town’s most famous supporters are. The club describes Morecambe as its most famous director, while BBC Sport says Owen took over the mantle of Luton’s leading celebrity fan from him. There is no established, authoritative top-five ranking: other well-documented Luton connections include a supporters’ trust representative, a long-time local fan and a former academy player who later managed the club, but those are different claims.
Who are Luton Town’s most famous supporters?
The strongest evidence points to two nationally recognisable figures, rather than a definitive top five. Luton Town’s official account documents entertainer Eric Morecambe’s public attachment to the club. BBC Sport’s 21 May 2023 feature describes broadcaster Nick Owen as taking over Morecambe’s celebrity-fan mantle; it also identifies Owen as a former Luton chairman. That is a reported description of his standing, not a formal ranking.
Eric Morecambe
The club’s article, “Eric Morecambe and Luton Town FC,” calls Morecambe “Luton Town’s most famous director.” It describes a connection that reached beyond a boardroom title: Morecambe and Wise sketches regularly referenced Luton, and Morecambe appeared on The Big Match to discuss the team. The club also recalls his playful rivalry with Elton John, who was then a director at Watford.
Those specific, club-documented public references make Morecambe the strongest-supported name for a famous Luton supporter. The club’s wording calls him a director, so that role should not be confused with the broader label of fan.

Nick Owen
BBC Sport’s 2023 feature identifies Owen as a broadcaster and former Luton chairman, and says he took over the leading celebrity-fan mantle from Morecambe. His prominence is supported by both his public profile and his direct leadership role at the club. His chairmanship is former, not current.
Why there is no reliable “top five” ranking
The available reporting does not establish a universal list of five celebrity supporters or a method for ranking them. “Famous supporter” can also blur together very different relationships: public celebrity, long-term local fandom, supporters’ advocacy, and a past playing or management connection. The distinctions matter if a list is to be more than an unsupported roll call.

Three other people help show the range of documented Luton connections, but should not be presented as three additional celebrity fans:
- Kevin Harper — supporters’ trust representative. BBC Sport’s 26 May 2023 feature identifies Harper as a Luton fan and a representative of the Luton Town Supporters’ Trust. It quotes him saying: “Luton wrongly gets written off, both the football club and the town.” That makes him a documented supporter voice, not necessarily a nationally famous celebrity.
- Maqsood Anwar — long-time local fan. The same BBC feature describes Anwar as a Luton fan of 40 years and reports his account of links between the football club and the adjacent Medina Masjid. This supports a local-community profile, not a claim to national fame.
- Jack Wilshere — former academy player and manager. Luton Town’s 13 October 2025 article, “The appeal of Luton Town,” says Wilshere was in the club’s centre of excellence from age eight to ten before moving to Arsenal, and covers his return as Luton manager. That is a substantial club connection, but it does not establish that he is a lifelong fan.
How to describe the five names accurately
| Person | What is documented | What that supports |
|---|---|---|
| Eric Morecambe | The club calls him its most famous director and records public references to Luton. | Celebrity supporter figure and former director. |
| Nick Owen | BBC Sport describes him as taking over Morecambe’s celebrity-fan mantle; he is a former chairman. | Celebrity fan and former club leader. |
| Kevin Harper | BBC Sport identifies him as a Luton fan and supporters’ trust representative. | Organised supporter voice. |
| Maqsood Anwar | BBC Sport identifies him as a 40-year Luton fan and reports his perspective on local community links. | Long-time local supporter. |
| Jack Wilshere | The club documents his academy years and later return as manager. | Former academy player and manager; the cited account does not establish him as a fan. |
So, if “top five” means five verified celebrity supporters, the evidence does not justify filling all five places. If the aim is to show five notable people connected to Luton, the names above can be included only with the different roles made clear.
