A MIDI keyboard can cue a slide whistle to play “Seven Nation Army,” but the instrument is a custom-built machine, not a plug-in keyboard accessory. In The Mixed Signal’s design, an Arduino Due reads USB MIDI notes and drives a stepper motor that moves a piston inside a PVC tube; a blower pushes air through a 3D-printed fipple to make the sound.
How the MIDI slide whistle makes music
The keyboard sends note commands; it does not make the whistle sound. The Arduino Due translates those commands into stepper positions. A rack-and-pinion mechanism moves a piston, changing the tube’s effective length and therefore its pitch. Meanwhile, a centrifugal blower supplies air to the PVC whistle, and a fipple—the mouthpiece feature that shapes airflow—sets the air vibrating.
That combination of electronic control, moving parts and airflow is what lets the instrument perform a melody. The Hackster.io article presents the “Seven Nation Army” performance, while creator The Mixed Signal’s project page documents the build and its components.
What the documented build uses
The creator’s parts list describes a particular maker project, not a universal parts recipe. Its main components include:
#1 Best Overall
- Reliable and safe material: slide whistle is made of durable plastic, light in weight and proper size, durable and reliable to use, adopts smooth edge design with no special taste, will do no harm to users, can be applied for a long time
- Easy to adjust tone: the musical whistle toy looks simple but adopts fine workmanship, which ensures smooth transition from low to high notes, and the handle part allow the transitions more easier, which can be adjusted by sliding the handle above
- Bring you happy: this sliding whistle is classic and interesting to play with, will bring back the good memories of childhood, ideal for you to play songs, imitate birds, make interesting sounds or create your own video tracks, which is limited by your musical imagination, also is a nice gift
- Bright colors: package includes 2 pieces musical instrument, will add more tones to your daily life, to bring you life more vitality; You can use them by yourself or share them with others, also can be applied to interact with loving friends
- Applicable occasions: slide whistle musical instrument is a funny and creative toy, you can apply it as an educational tool, or just as a musical instrument, the slide whistle is about 10 inch that can stretch up to 16.5 inches, ideal for children's play or apply as a parent-child game
- An Arduino Due, using its Native USB port and the MIDIUSB library to receive MIDI.
- A NEMA17 stepper motor rated at 2A, with an A4988 driver; the project describes using 1/8 microstepping.
- A CNC Shield v3, listed as optional on the project page.
- A 50 × 15 mm blower fan to provide airflow.
- An 8 mm × 400 mm rod and 400 mm of PVC pipe with a 1/2-inch inside diameter.
- Custom 3D-printed pieces, a laser-cut base plate, power supplies, fasteners and inserts.
The firmware maps MIDI notes to motor positions and includes a tuning mode, according to the creator. That mapping is central to the instrument: a MIDI note must correspond to a physical piston position that produces the intended pitch.
What it takes to build one
This is a fabrication project for someone equipped to make and adjust custom parts. The documented work includes printing components, laser-cutting the base, fitting heated inserts with a soldering iron, cutting and clamping the PVC pipe, assembling the rack-and-pinion, aligning the motor, and tuning both the instrument and driver.

The project page labels the build advanced and says it does not provide formal instructions. It recommends the shorter rack option for a print bed smaller than 300 × 300 mm. Anyone substituting parts should verify USB MIDI compatibility, motor-driver current and voltage, blower and power-supply voltage, and mechanical fit rather than assuming alternatives will work.

The creator’s page, dated August 23, 2020, describes the project as functional but not fully finished. In the documented version, the mechanism needs manual homing—the piston’s starting position must be set by hand. The creator mentions a limit switch as a possible future way to define that home position. The page does not establish that a later version added one.
