Those choices make the remake feel like a reinterpretation rather than a scene-for-scene copy. They also make its strongest moments more grounded—and its ending less persuasive.
How the remake approaches the 2002 original
Disney describes the 2025 film as a live-action reimagining of the 2002 animated movie. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and starring Maia Kealoha as Lilo and Sydney Elizebeth Agudong as Nani, it runs 1 hour 52 minutes. Disney UK lists its release date as 21 May 2025. Disney UK’s film listing
Fleischer Camp said the aim was to honor the original without reproducing it literally: “We tried to adapt it in a way that paid loving tribute to the original, but wasn’t a one-to-one literal translation.” He also described wanting a film that “rhymed spiritually with the original film but was a little modernized.” Producer Jonathan Eirich said the team asked whether a possible change was merely different or “potentially better and new.” Those comments explain the filmmakers’ intentions; whether a particular change improves the story is a matter of judgment. What changes in Lilo and Nani’s story?
Nani’s future becomes a more explicit conflict
The Associated Press notes that the remake expands Nani’s desire to become a marine biologist. That gives her a more visible future beyond caring for Lilo, sharpening the dilemma at the heart of their relationship: Nani is trying to build a life of her own while carrying responsibility for her younger sister. The conflict makes their bond feel less like a fixed premise and more like a daily negotiation between love, duty and independence. Associated Press review

- Experience this funny and touching live-action reimagining of Disney’s animated classic. When a lonely girl named Lilo adopts Stitch, an alien “puppy,” Stitch helps to mend Lilo’s broken family — but not without wreaking hilarious havoc on the Hawaiian Islands.
This is one of the remake’s most meaningful adaptations. The animated film already asks viewers to take Nani’s caregiving seriously; the new version gives that responsibility a clearer counterweight. Nani’s ambitions are not simply a subplot. They make the sisters’ family situation more complicated without making their affection less central.
More people share the sisters’ world
The live-action film adds Tūtū, a longtime neighbor played by Amy Hill, and Mrs. Kekoa, a social-services worker played by Tia Carrere. Jason Scott Lee, who voiced David in the animated original, appears as a lūʻau manager. These roles change the social landscape around Lilo and Nani: their story is no longer carried only by the sisters and the adults pursuing a decision about Lilo’s care. The new characters provide more points of contact with the community and with the systems affecting the family. Walt Disney Studios production notes

That wider network supports the remake’s more grounded approach. It can make the sisters’ circumstances feel embedded in a community rather than isolated for the sake of a simple adventure plot. The trade-off is that additional characters and story threads compete for attention in a film whose emotional center remains the sisters’ relationship.
How the setting and production choices shape the retelling
The remake was shot in Hawai‘i, and screenwriter Chris Kekaniokalani Bright was born and raised there. Eirich said cultural advisers contributed to decisions involving music, dialogue, locations and the film’s spirit. Fleischer Camp described live action as requiring “a real story” grounded in people’s lived experience of hardship. These are concrete production choices intended to anchor the story in place and human experience; consultation and location alone do not settle how every viewer will judge the film’s cultural authenticity. That grounding matters because live action changes the texture of the premise. The sisters’ struggles are presented through human performances and recognizable surroundings, while Stitch and the alien threat bring the heightened fantasy. The tension between those registers is central to the remake’s identity: it tries to make the family drama feel lived-in without abandoning the broad adventure that made the original a family film.
What changes in the alien pursuit and tone?
The remake adjusts the pursuers as well as the family story. The AP review notes that the aliens use cloning technology to appear human and that the film introduces a CIA officer. These additions broaden the pursuit beyond the original setup and push the movie toward a more conventional action-adventure structure. The resulting scale can make the threat more immediate, but it also shifts attention away from the intimate stakes that give Lilo and Nani’s story its force.

That shift is clearest in the ending. AP characterized the conclusion as action-heavy and found the remake’s larger, more explosive direction at odds with what made the original emotionally distinctive. That is the review’s criticism, not a universal verdict. Still, it identifies the adaptation’s main risk: adding spectacle can make the movie busier without making its central relationships more affecting.

There is a strong case for the remake as one of Disney’s more successful live-action reinterpretations when the measure is whether it gives familiar material a new emotional angle. Nani’s ambitions add genuine tension to her caregiving role; the added community figures make the sisters’ world feel wider; and the Hawai‘i production choices give the retelling a stated grounding in place and lived experience. The counterargument is substantial. The Associated Press called it a “sweet but unnecessary” remake, praised Kealoha and the sisters’ emotional premise, and objected to the more explosive ending. That response captures why the film’s changes are uneven: some deepen the human conflict, while others make the adventure louder without improving its emotional payoff. The title’s praise is defensible as an argument about the remake’s best choices, but not as an objective ranking established by the available evidence.
Its opening-weekend response was strong, though that should not be mistaken for a final performance or a critical consensus. Disney’s May 2025 announcement reported $361.3 million worldwide and $182.7 million in North America, alongside a 93% Rotten Tomatoes Verified Audience score and an A CinemaScore. These are figures Disney reported in its launch-period announcement, not current or final totals. The Walt Disney Company’s opening-weekend announcement
