Friday, August 1, at Lollapalooza 2025 brought four very different performances to Grant Park: Olivia Rodrigo made her Chicago festival debut and welcomed Weezer, Korn returned to the festival after 28 years, T-Pain turned his set into a cover-filled party, and Bleachers brought Jack Antonoff’s band to a prime-time slot before Korn. The contemporary reviews capture contrasts in sound, set choices and surprises—not a definitive ranking.
What happened when Olivia Rodrigo brought out Weezer?
At her Chicago Lollapalooza debut, Olivia Rodrigo drew on both GUTS and SOUR. Rolling Stone’s account names “Obsessed,” “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl,” “Driver’s License,” “Traitor,” “Bad Idea, Right?” and “Love Is Embarrassing” among the songs she performed. The surprise came when Weezer joined her for “Buddy Holly” and “Say It Ain’t So.” Rodrigo closed with an encore that culminated in “Get Him Back!”
During the performance, Rodrigo told the crowd, “Take care of the person next to you,” as quoted by Rolling Stone. The guest appearance made the set’s pop-and-rock mix especially tangible: a festival debut built around her own songs, with a familiar Weezer pairing as its standout surprise.
How did Korn’s return differ from the other sets?
Korn’s Lollapalooza appearance carried a historical thread: the band had last played the festival in 1997, when it was still a touring event. Its 2025 set marked a return 28 years later—not 28 consecutive editions of the festival.

Rolling Stone describes Korn as nu-metal pioneers and says the band sounded heavier than in its heyday. That comparison is the reviewer’s assessment, rather than an objective measurement. Where Rodrigo’s set had a high-profile guest moment, Korn’s defining context was the distance between its earlier Lollapalooza appearance and this return.
What made T-Pain’s set a party?
Rolling Stone reports that T-Pain packed the Bud Light stage and framed the performance as a party, mixing his own hits with other material. The Chicago Sun-Times highlights three covers: Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Tennessee Whiskey” and Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me.” The last song gave his voice room to be heard beyond the Auto-Tune sound many listeners associate with him.

That cover-heavy approach offered a different route to crowd connection from Rodrigo’s guest appearance: recognizable songs and a playful shift across styles. The available accounts describe the atmosphere, but do not establish an official crowd count.

That absence is part of the set’s story: unlike Rodrigo’s Weezer cameo, Bleachers’ reported appeal centered on the band’s own performance rather than an unannounced guest moment. The reviews provide a contrast in set dynamics, not enough evidence to declare one act the stronger performance.

What Friday’s lineup shows
- Rodrigo’s Chicago festival debut paired songs from two albums with a Weezer appearance.
- Korn’s set connected the 2025 festival to its 1997 touring-era appearance.
- T-Pain and Bleachers offered sharply different kinds of sets: a playful, cover-filled party and a prime-time band performance with no guest cameo.
These distinctions make the four acts a useful snapshot of Friday’s range. The contemporary reviews support memorable details and contrasts, but not a numerical ranking of the performances.
