Producers Sounwave, Mustard and Jack Antonoff describe how they developed that sound with Kendrick Lamar—and why the album’s process was less about sending him familiar beats than finding ideas that prompted an unexpected response.
How did GNX’s sound take shape?
GNX is a 12-track surprise album released in November 2024. The Associated Press lists Sounwave, DJ Mustard and Jack Antonoff among its producers, and notes SZA’s appearances on “Luther” and “Gloria.” [Associated Press]
Sounwave described the opening phase as “throwing paint on the wall.” As ideas began to cohere, he said, the work “started to form this massive funky West groove that we love because [Kendrick and I are] from Compton.” He recalled bringing in “the Mustards, the Jacks” to push that developing direction further. These remarks come from Sounwave, as quoted in VICE’s report of Variety’s interview naming the three producers Variety’s Producers of the Year. [VICE]
How did the producers approach working with Lamar?
Sounwave set out the developing direction
Sounwave’s account describes a process that began without a fixed destination and gained a clearer identity as the collaborators worked. His comments connect that direction to his and Lamar’s shared Compton roots, while also describing a decision to bring in other producers to extend the sound.

Mustard sent ideas outside his usual lane
Mustard said he adjusted what he sent Lamar: “I knew that I couldn’t send Kendrick normal Mustard beats.” Instead, he sent “all types of s—t, anything that I thought sounded like something that I’ve never made before.” The edited expletive is reproduced as printed in VICE’s account of Variety’s interview. [VICE]
Antonoff described a shared creative language
Antonoff emphasized the working chemistry among the producers: “We have such a specific language between us, me and Sounwave.” He said the three developed “our own thing,” adding, “You have it or you don’t with people. When you have it, it’s really magical; when you don’t, you go home.” The remarks are quoted by VICE from Variety’s interview. [VICE]

How many songs did Kendrick Lamar record for GNX?
The producers estimated that Lamar recorded between 80 and 100 songs for the album, according to VICE’s report of Variety’s interview. That is an attributed estimate, not an independently verified count; it should not be mistaken for the number of tracks on the released album. [VICE]
What does “Hey Now” reveal about the process?
Mustard’s account of “Hey Now” offers a specific example of an older beat finding a new purpose. He said he made the beat in 2019 and tried it with YG, Quavo and Ty Dolla $ign before it became part of GNX. As quoted by HipHopDX from Grammy.com, Lamar said the beat made him feel “like Goku or something,” then explained: “when I hear certain shit on your beats, it brings out something else in me, so I just did whatever I felt.” The anecdote describes this track’s path, not a rule for how every song on the album was made. What the credits and critical response add
The Associated Press identifies Antonoff as a co-producer on every track except “Peekaboo,” and names Sounwave and Mustard among the album’s other notable producers. That offers album-level context rather than a complete track-by-track credit audit. [Associated Press]
Variety’s review also describes California and West Coast musical references on the record; that is a critic’s interpretation, distinct from the collaborators’ own accounts of how the sound developed. [Variety]
