Joker: Folie à Deux opened in U.S. and Canadian theaters to $37,678,467 over October 4–6, 2024, according to Box Office Mojo. That later-reported total came in below Warner Bros.’ initial $40 million estimate—and far short of the first Joker’s roughly $96.2 million domestic debut in 2019.
How much did Joker 2 make opening weekend?
Box Office Mojo’s domestic weekend table records Joker: Folie à Deux at $37,678,467 for October 4–6, 2024. The Associated Press reported Warner Bros.’ initial studio estimate as $40 million on October 6. These figures are not contradictory: the $40 million was an early estimate, while $37,678,467 is the later reported weekend total.
Some contemporaneous coverage rounded the sequel’s opening to $37.5 million, $37.7 million, or $38 million. The more precise figure in Box Office Mojo’s table is $37,678,467.
How did it compare with the first Joker?
The original Joker opened domestically to about $96.2 million in 2019, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 weekend report. The sequel’s $37.7 million opening was less than half that amount—a drop of roughly 61 percent in opening-weekend gross.

| Film | Domestic opening weekend | Release period |
|---|---|---|
| Joker | About $96.2 million | 2019 |
| Joker: Folie à Deux | $37,678,467 | October 4–6, 2024 |
The comparison is about domestic opening weekends, not total theatrical performance. It shows a much weaker start for the sequel; by itself, it does not determine either film’s profitability.
What were expectations before opening?
About three weeks before the sequel opened, tracking services were projecting a debut around $70 million, the Associated Press reported. That was a tracking projection, not Warner Bros.’ official studio estimate. The studio’s initial $40 million estimate, reported on October 6, was closer to the eventual weekend total.

Keeping the numbers distinct matters: the $70 million projection described an earlier expectation, $40 million was the studio’s estimate, and $37,678,467 was the later-reported domestic actual.
What did the analyst say about the opening?
Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s senior media analyst, described the combination of the weak opening and poor audience reviews as a “double whammy that’s very difficult to recover from,” the Associated Press reported on October 6, 2024. That is a specific analyst’s assessment, not evidence of a broader expert consensus.

The film’s poor reception among audiences was part of the context for his comment. The available report does not establish that Dergarabedian used the phrase “unmitigated disaster,” so that wording should not be presented as his quotation.
Does the opening prove the film lost money?
No. The Numbers lists a $190 million production budget, but that is a reported budget figure, not audited studio accounting. A production budget alone does not include every cost of releasing and marketing a film, and box-office gross is not the same as the amount returned to the studio. The opening weekend therefore cannot support a precise loss calculation.
