When does Lent end in 2026?
There is no single endpoint that describes every Christian calendar. In the Roman Catholic explanation, Lent ends at sundown on Holy Thursday, April 2, when the Easter Triduum begins. The Anglican Church of Canada’s calendar labels Lent through Holy Saturday, April 4. These are different ways of marking the season, not a disagreement about the date of Easter.

The Anglican Church of Canada describes Lent as a 40-day period that excludes Sundays. That count is a church-calendar convention; February 18 through April 4 spans more than 40 consecutive calendar dates.
What Lent means
Lent is a period of preparation for Easter. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops describes it as a 40-day season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, beginning on Ash Wednesday. The Church of England describes it as a time to reflect on one’s behavior and seek to live according to Jesus’s teaching. Bible study and gathering with other Christians for reflection are among the practices it identifies.
Ash Wednesday and ashes
In many churches, Ash Wednesday is associated with penitence and the imposition of ashes. The Church of England explains that ashes marked on the forehead in the sign of a cross signify penitence and trust in God. This is not a practice shared by every Christian tradition.
How people observe Lent
Prayer, fasting, almsgiving, reflection and Bible study are commonly cited Lenten practices, but how people observe the season varies by church and individual. The point is preparation and reflection, rather than assuming every Christian follows the same practices.

A brief history of Lent
Early Christians prepared for Easter with two days of fasting and penitence, according to Vatican News. That preparation later extended across Holy Week, and Lent’s form changed over time. The USCCB also notes that the season’s historical duration varied, ranging from a week to three weeks before reaching its present configuration. Ash Wednesday eventually became the marker for Lent’s beginning in the Western calendars described here.

The dates in this article are for 2026 and reflect the cited Roman Catholic and Anglican sources. When comparing calendars, check which church tradition and calendar is being used, what it names as the first and final days of Lent, and whether Sundays count toward a stated 40 days. These sources do not establish exact 2026 Orthodox dates, so the Western dates above should not be assumed to apply to Orthodox Christians. For service times, consult your local parish; the Vatican’s published schedule is not a timetable for local churches.
