Pokémon Legends: Z-A may make Lysandre easier to understand, but understanding a villain can change what made him frightening in the first place. Whether that change deepens his character or softens his impact is a matter of interpretation—not a settled verdict among players.
Spoiler notice: The discussion below addresses character and story developments in Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Pokémon X and Y.

What changes when a villain gets more context?
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is set five years after Pokémon X and Y and builds on their story world, according to Tom’s Guide. That continuity makes its treatment of Lysandre more than a standalone antagonist question: it invites players to reconsider the man they encountered in the earlier games.
The strongest case for saying Z-A “ruined” Lysandre is not simply that it adds information. It is that added context can redirect attention from what a villain chose to do toward why he did it. If a later portrayal encourages sympathy without giving equal weight to those choices and their consequences, the original menace may feel diminished.

Motive and ideology
Understanding a motive can make an antagonist more coherent. It does not automatically make that motive defensible. The critical question is whether the new framing helps explain Lysandre’s worldview while leaving its harms visible, or whether explanation begins to function like an excuse.
Accountability
A sympathetic or redemptive reading can add emotional complexity, but it works best when it does not erase responsibility. If the story’s emotional emphasis shifts toward Lysandre’s humanity more than the consequences of his earlier actions, some players may feel that the character has been softened rather than deepened. That is an interpretation of the effect, not proof that every player reads the story that way.
Does the new portrayal deepen Lysandre?
The counterargument is that humanizing a villain can make him more compelling, not less. A character can remain responsible for terrible choices while becoming more than a symbol of evil. For players who find value in that tension, a redemptive or more sympathetic reading gives Lysandre another dimension and makes his place in the series’ story more complicated.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
That disagreement appears in community discussion. Pokémon Forums users frame broader debates with questions such as “Who was the best villain in terms of how they were written?” and “Who’s the real antagonist in Pokemon Legends Z-A?” Reddit discussions likewise include both positive readings of Lysandre’s humanization and complaints about the story’s execution. These are individual reactions, not representative polling or evidence of a prevailing consensus: Pokémon Forums and Reddit.
How much does the story’s execution matter?
A character turn can be sound in principle and still fail to land if the story does not give it enough room or make its emotional steps persuasive. Reviews of Z-A offer useful context about the game’s broader narrative, but they do not settle the specific question of whether its treatment of Lysandre succeeds.
Tom’s Guide describes the story as heartwarming and engaging, particularly for players invested in X and Y, while also criticizing the absence of voice acting. TechRadar calls the plot fun but says it is unlikely to win awards for narrative design. Those are distinct reviewers’ judgments, not a consensus—and neither is a direct verdict on Lysandre’s characterization: Tom’s Guide and TechRadar.

Verdict: weakened impact, not a universally ruined character
Calling Lysandre one of Pokémon’s best villains is a judgment about writing and impact, not an objective ranking. The “ruined” argument is strongest when Z-A’s added context seems to soften the moral clarity and menace that made him effective in X and Y. The defense is strongest when that context reads as added complexity without absolution.
So the sharper verdict is that Z-A changes how some players can read Lysandre, and that change may weaken his impact for those who wanted his earlier villainy to remain stark. It can also make him more layered for players who value a humanizing continuation. The available discussion does not establish that all players agree—or that the game definitively ruins him.
