What Janis Ian recalled happening onstage
In the PBS American Masters documentary Janis Ian: Breaking Silence, Ian said she could not initially make out what people in the audience were shouting. She then realized they were chanting a racist epithet at her.
Ian said she did not know whether the chanters were a small group or most of the audience. As the noise grew louder, she worried she would cry in front of everyone. She recalled: “So I put down my guitar on the stage… …and I walked off stage and I went to the restroom.” She said she cried there. The promoter, who had been at the box office and had not seen what happened, later asked her why she had left.
Ian’s memoir also recounts a hostile crowd, her effort to keep singing, and her leaving for the ladies’ room. It is another first-person account, not independent contemporary corroboration. The available accounts do not establish the performance’s date or venue, or how many people were chanting.

Why “Society’s Child” provoked a reaction
“Society’s Child” tells of a white girl whose bigoted parents forbid her from seeing her Black boyfriend. Ian’s official press material says she began writing the song after seeing an interracial couple on a New Jersey bus.
The song put racial prejudice at the center of a story about a young couple, rather than treating opposition to their relationship as incidental. Ian’s official press material says she was booed offstage by racists, received frightening hate mail and encountered radio bans. Those are claims made in artist publicity material; the material does not provide independently established station counts or a specific nationwide measure.

The song’s difficult path to radio
A 2009 interview with Ian describes the song’s uneven path to airplay, with cities taking it up at different times. That supports a picture of varied reception, not a particular chart ranking. Without an original chart record or another documented measure, a precise ranking or broad claim about its commercial performance should not be inferred.
