The woman’s civil lawsuit against Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs ended in February 2025 when she voluntarily dismissed it with prejudice. The filing gave no reason for the withdrawal. In a separate development reported in September 2026, she said she had never met or spoken with Jay-Z and that her claims identifying him were false. Her lawyer said she maintained that she had been sexually assaulted but had mistaken Carter for someone else. The dismissal was not a court finding about whether an assault occurred.
What happened to the lawsuit?
The complaint was first filed against Combs in October 2024 and amended in December to name Shawn Carter, professionally known as Jay-Z. It alleged that the woman, then 13, was assaulted by the two men after a 2000 MTV Video Music Awards after-party. Those were allegations in a civil complaint, not facts established by a court. Both men denied them. The Los Angeles Times reported the filing history and allegations.
On February 14, 2025, the plaintiff voluntarily dismissed the case with prejudice, according to reporting on the federal filing. “With prejudice” means the same complaint cannot be filed again. It describes the effect of the dismissal, not a judicial decision that the allegations were true or false. The contemporaneous reports said the filing did not explain why she withdrew the case. The Associated Press reported the withdrawal; the Los Angeles Times explained the effect of dismissal with prejudice.
What did the woman later say about Jay-Z?
In September 2026, The Guardian reported on a declaration filed in later litigation. The woman said: “Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter never raped me. I have never met or spoken to Mr Carter. Mr Carter never engaged in any inappropriate conduct toward me whatsoever.” She also said there was “no truth to any of my claims against Mr Carter.” These are statements attributed to her declaration, rather than findings made by a court.

Her current lawyer, James Blair Newman Jr, told the Guardian that she maintained she was a victim of sexual assault but had been “entirely mistaken” in identifying Carter. That distinction matters: her reported retraction concerned her claims against Jay-Z; her lawyer’s account did not say she was retracting every claim of having experienced an assault.
Why did she withdraw the 2025 case?
The February 2025 dismissal filing gave no explanation. The later declaration was reported in September 2026, more than a year afterward, and should not be presented as the stated reason for the earlier withdrawal. The available reporting does not establish why she dismissed the case.

What did Jay-Z and the lawyers say?
Jay-Z denied the allegations. After the withdrawal, the Associated Press reported that he called it “a victory” and said the suit was “without merit.” His lawyer, Alex Spiro, told the Los Angeles Times that Carter had “cleared his name.” Those are statements by Carter and his lawyer, not judicial conclusions about the underlying events.
The Guardian also reported a response from Tony Buzbee, the woman’s former lawyer, who said that if she was now claiming she had lied to him and the court, that was “new information.” His response, like the other parties’ statements, is an attributed position rather than independent verification.

How is the later litigation different?
The Guardian placed the declaration in the context of separate litigation: it reported that the woman had been dropped from Jay-Z’s suit while he continued pursuing her former lawyers. That proceeding is distinct from her civil complaint against Jay-Z and Combs, which had already been dismissed in February 2025. The dismissal of her complaint should not be confused with the status or outcome of the later case.
