Two days later, he said the house was still standing, though damaged. His emotional account captured what the family understood in the moment—not the home’s eventual reported condition.
What Woods said during the CNN interview
In a January 8, 2025, CNN Newsroom interview, Woods described evacuating quickly as the Palisades fire threatened the area. He said he was near the fire’s epicenter and recounted helping locate a 94-year-old neighbor with dementia who had been left at home. According to Woods, the neighbor was brought out, and the house burned about an hour later.
Woods spoke as he and his family believed their own home was gone. As Variety reported on January 9, he said, “One day you’re swimming in the pool and the next day it’s all gone.” Variety also reported that his wife’s niece offered her piggy bank money to help rebuild—a gesture made while the family thought the house had been destroyed.
Did James Woods lose his home?
Not completely, according to Woods’s later update. On January 10, he posted that he and his family had reached the property and found the home still standing. The Associated Press reported the update on January 11, quoting Woods: “We managed to get to our property and our home, that we were told is gone forever, is still standing.”

Woods qualified that description: “In this hellish landscape ‘standing’ is relative, but smoke and other damage is not like the utter destruction around us.” The later account corrected the initial impression of total loss; it did not say the home was undamaged.
Why the interview was so emotional
The interview unfolded during an active and dangerous evacuation, as Woods described the abrupt change from ordinary life to fearing that the family home and surrounding neighborhood had been lost. The neighbor’s rescue and the niece’s offer to help rebuild added personal details to that account. CNN’s transcript also included Los Angeles County emergency management director Kevin McGowan warning residents, “This is not a normal red flag.”

The distinction between the two dates matters: the January 8 interview reflected what Woods believed amid the fire; his January 10 post, reported the following day, described what he found when he returned to the property.
